Nintendominates video game hardware sales for June

The sales numbers released by research firm NPD Group for June continue to highlight Nintendo’s current strength in the market. Both the Nintendo DS and Wii lead all of its competitors in terms of software and hardware sales.

The Nintendo DS collected even more sales than during May, moving an amazing 561,900 units. The Wii followed closely behind with 381,800, also slightly up from the previous month.

Nintendo’s near-obsolete Game Boy Advance sold a surprising 109,400 consoles, despite there being no new software released for the handheld.

Sony took sat next in the ladder, with the PSP selling 290,100 and the undying PlayStation 2 at 270,700 units. The PlayStation 3, which was once again the lowest-selling, current-market console, only managed to sell 98,500 units.

Microsoft’s Xbox 360 sold 198,400 units, also up from May’s figures.

Overall, video game hardware sales were up 34 percent for the month as compared to the same period last year – accumulating $398.6 million.

geez, some people live and die by the transistor count in their consoles . . .

But I do appreciate how on one hand you want people to think you're a super-sophisticated gamer that needs games with "depth" and "meat my games" while simultaneously making the definitive aspect of a next-gen console its graphics.

Sheesh, some people are so close-minded about how the video-game market is going to evolve, insisting each generation must have more graphical horsepower in order to be considered a legitimate successor. Yes, that's one way to build a new console, Sony and MS thought so. Nintendo thought outside the box and decided to concentrate on innovative gameplay instead.

Discounting the Wii's approach to next-gen is like saying "dur, gameboy sucks because the graphics are worse than a console" - without considering the fact that it's PORTABLE.

Even if the approach isn't to your taste (I, from my life/workstyle, have no need for a portable gaming system), it doesn't mean that there is something inherently "wrong" with the system.

name a title that the gamecube could not run?

Wii Sports.

Pretty sure that game would be less fun on a Gamecube. But judging by your pretentiousness, I'm guessing you didn't enjoy the game so much, and are going to retort with a snarky "the graphics would be the same on a Gamecube."

Yeah well, you're right, but without the Wii-mote the experience wouldn't be the same. Frankly, there are dozens of games/consoles out there I don't care for. Like I said previously, I've never felt the need for a gameboy because I don't need to be gaming 24/7 and I can wait 'till I get home to fire my console up. But I don't bash the Gameboy as a "one-trick pony", or regard it as less of a "game console" just because I don't appreciate its strengths.

I mean, whatever, if you care so much about the "next-gen" label, you can go petition to Websters to have it defined precisely the way you want it to, but I'm just gonna tell you now that there's a lot of people out there who are much more open-minded about just exactly what it means to be "next-gen".

You just said that wii sports would be less fun on gamecube, but nothing about it not being able to run on gamecube, so why did you quote him?

Because it doesn't really "run" on the gamecube if you're losing out on the main gameplay draw.

It's like claiming that Gears of War will "run" on my VCR because I can record gameplay footage of it on a tape and play it back.

It isn't exactly "running" if you're not getting the full gameplay experience, now is it?

geez, some people live and die by the transistor count in their consoles . . .

and some people are in denial about what next gen is..(mainly wii owners, what a surprise!!)
sorry to tell you but the term 'next gen' has been used long before this generation of consoles, when HDTV's were first introduced as 'NEXT GENERATION WITH MUCH BETTER VIDEO QUALITY'

so i do not see what it is so hard to consider that the wii not being HD is not really 'Next Gen'

As previously stated, the wii is an overclocked gamecube, same cpu, same graphics core just increased clock speed, and of course a nice new case and all new controller technology.

So yes it is a totally different way to play, but next gen, i think not. Do not get me wrong i have own a wii, and i love it do death, but in the end clock to clock, its maybe on par with the original xbox and i do not go around to all my friends bragging about my next generation wii console.

then again, the whole next gen fad is just a marketing ploy to get you to buy that nice new fancy tv, and or console ;)

You know - I was gonna patent my Virtual Reality Gaming Machine that, instead of projecting images on a television, would directly send them to your brain to create the most realistic gaming experience known to man. It also comes with a body suit that simulates tactile feeling in game, as well as special nose plugs that simulate smell.

But it doesn't do 1080p.

Off-topic, but you know, appreciating the the point-of-view, humor, sarcasm, whatever, of an opponent in a debate is probably one of the most difficult things to do in life. Particularly in an internet forum where internet culture seems to promote stubborn, close-minded, flaming, fan-boy-ism.

Good for you.
