July 22 has arrived and Core 2 Quad Q6600s for under $300

Intel last week released a new lineup of 1333 MHz front-side bus processors at low price points, but held off price cuts for existing processors until July 22. The day has arrived and Intel price cuts for existing Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad processors are going into effect at various retailers.

Q6700 2.66 GHz 8MB1066 MHz
$530
Q6600 2.40 GHz 8MB 1066 MHz
$266

Intel’s star for this round of price cuts is the quad-core Core 2 Quad Q6600. The price cut cuts the Core 2 Quad Q6600 price in half to $266 per processor, in 1,000-unit quantities, from the existing $530 price. The Core 2 Quad Q6600 is the only sub-$300 quad-core processor available on the market. Intel has positioned the Core 2 Quad Q6700, which launched last week, at the $530 price point.

Retailers have adjusted prices of the Core 2 Quad Q6600 accordingly. A quick search for the processor at online retailers shows prices starting at $275. ClubIT, Mwave, Newegg and ZipZoomFly have the processors listed below $300. However, Newegg has already sold out of Core 2 Quad Q6600 processors.

The price cuts also affect Core 2 Duo E4000-sequence processors. Intel’s Core 2 Duo E4400 drops $20 to $113 to make way for a new Core 2 Duo E4500. The new Core 2 Duo E4500 debuts at a $133 price point with a 200 MHz clock speed advantage.

If the $266 price tag is still a bit too steep, Intel plans to cut prices of its Xeon processor lineup in August. The Xeon price cuts affect quad-core Xeon UP and MP processors. The Intel quad-core Xeon processor lineup includes a 2.13 GHz X3210. Intel plans to drop the price on the Xeon X3210 to $224 come August.

Where vendors continue to gouge. I have found two retailers in the entire country that are honoring the new pricing.

What's your definition of "price gouging?" The price of $266 (USD) is wholesale bulk of 1,000. ZZF and NewEgg are charging about 12% more than that at the retail level. Intel didn't have to cut wholesale Q6600 prices by 50%. I never look a gift horse in the mouth, but that's just me.

ZZF and NewEgg are american. I'm talking about local vendors here still selling it for as high as $789 CAD.

Don't you have higher taxes? Wouldn't that account for the price difference?

DAY-UM! The loonie is nearly equal to a dollar now so that's a hell of a markup even on the original $530 MSRP. Just out of curiousity, I went to NCIX and looked up the Canadian price. $630 for a Q6600 still although that's pretty close to the old MSRP. Maybe they'll start dropping their prices over the next few days or so.

NCIX has them for $289CAD IF you click through a link on a flyer they sent out. They are calling the new price a special promotion. There is one other vendor here selling for $319. To answer the previous poster our taxes are added ON TOP of these quoted prices. In Ontario where I am you add 14% to the price.

I've generally found it takes about a week for the price cuts to take effect on local Canadian retailers. It has been improving though.

Directcanada.com (my new favourite for mail order since my last build) is at $289.99CDN

Memoryexpress.com (I use them since they are local) is still at $629.99 and OOS but they are slow to update the website.

Wow, how clever of you, having two user names. Obviously hubajube=bob661.

You gave yourself away lower on in these comments when you (as bob661) said "They're both still at $300. Not the $275 in the article," and then replied lower down (as hubajube) saying, "I did. That's where I got the prices from..."

Pretty cheesy, if you ask me - defending yourself by creating a new user name.

I created the other after I forgot the password to the first one (bob661). Then I remembered the pass for bob661 but rarely use it. Cheesy...yes. Do I care? No.

I'm going to have to call you on that one.

bob661 has posted a total of 467 comments at DailyTech

You call 467 comments over the past 18+ months "rarely using it"? I don't understand what incentive you have to lie about that.

Thats the trick-

How to rate themselves up & rate YOU & OTHERS down.

How to support their original comment by USING the second the user name

You can have 10s of usernames & HACK the rating system
& the comment system.

Thats the reason I repeatedly said before SCRAP THE RATING SYSTEM.

As for having 10s of username- K.K. should find a solution to STOP IT.

Wow, using one account to rate up the other. And defending one account with the other. I can think of lots of words for that, and cheesy isn't the worst of it.

Kristopher Kubicki-Ed should respond & act on this !

We have people using duo/quad/+++++ USER NAMES-They are CORRUPTING the whole comment system.

Just like multiple cores (2,4,8 etc) similarly we have usernames & the worst part of it-

I AM SURE HE IS NOT THE ONLY ONE-THERE ARE MANY MORE LIKE HIM ON THIS SITE !

No offense Crystal Clear, but you take this whole forum thing WAY too seriously. I mean, who really cares if someone rates their own posts up, or defends themself with a different name. It is a little sneaky, but it doesn't change the content of their posts. This is only a message board, and it doesn't affect any meaningful part of your life.

Yes accept what you say-no problems with that.

I certainly dont take the forum thing so seriously-but at the same time, one should not treat it (the forum) as some JOKE.

I treat it as an exchange of views & there should be a reasonable element of seriousness(certainly not in their extremes).

Rating certainly dont bother me-either way !

An element of honesty mixed with maturity is needed-A site is rated not only by the quality of articles put up for discussion, but also the quality of comments that it recieves in response.

A MUST READ SITE has the above elements - I mentioned above !

Thats all-its great to be associated with a site that has a good reputation-thats important to me.

Thing is CC, this place IS a joke and hardly anyone takes it seriously (I don't and if I don't there are others that don't). I come here for the entertainment value. The flaming and ignorance are rampant and I (and some friends) find it quite hilarious. Hell, I even let my friends post under my name just to stir the pot! It's an unmoderated, open forum. What do you expect? Civil discussions? Facts? Please!!!

Occasionally, someone show up that's CLEARLY well informed and well studied but that is RARE and those people STILL get flamed! This place is a joke and I treat it as such.

I honestly don't see a lot of flaming. Maybe I tuned it out. But I do find myself reading these threads for very long stretches of time. I only do so cause I find them interesting to read. I don't take any humor value out of DT.

Your view is childish and selfish. This is not an unmoderated forum, it is a mostly user-moderated forum. The ability of this forum to basically self-regulate depends to a large extent on the integrity of the ratings system. People creating multiple accounts like you did and using them to manipulate the ratings system detract from the overall quality of the DT web site. Basically the quality of the DT site is what we make it, especially considering that >80% of the content is user-created.

Maybe so but that's part of the joke here. Anyone can come here and do this and I'm 100% certain that I'm not the only one. Hell, you could be doing it too for all I know and using me to distract the multitude of others from their daily flamings of your posts. And I'm sure you will take this opportunity to single me out and use me as a warning to others.

Registering several usernames to manipulate the rating system is childish. Using those same registrations to spoof support is pathetic. Truly.

Your actions do not agree with your statements. You continue to defend yourself. The fact that you take the time to do this shows you value the opinion of others reading here. If you think this place is a joke, then show it and stop posting.

Similarly whats DT site without the posters.

I am of the opinion that the very fact it is an open forum & unmoderated as you say, then it becomes a sort of a challenge for each one of us to make it a unique site-responsible/respectable/rich in contents/informative/etc without any supervision

A forum to exchange ideas/opinions/viewpoints in an decent, intelligent manner.

Its in our capacity & responsibility to shape it !

A site is rated not only by the quality of articles put up for discussion, but also the quality of comments that it recieves in response.

You say-The flaming and ignorance are rampant

These are guys who seek attention for themselves through such comments, thats their motive & intentions.

You find them in almost every site ! nothing new indeed.

Plus you have hot heads looking for an outlet to let off their pent up frustrations etc.

If there is a collective response from all on the site to-
simply ignore them & not respond to them they will simply move on to another site .

I think you are very capable of making some very constructive comments without resorting to those tactics.

A little bit of seriousness on your part could change your attitudes.

Give it a try !

We're aware of this. Having multiple accounts doesn't actually give you more mod points though. Nor does it let you rate and post at the same time.

Will Intel refund money for processors already in stock at those vendors that they themselves bought at the old price, or are you suggesting they are gouging if they don't sell it for half of the amount it costed them?

RE: Except if you live in Canada
By TomZ on 7/23/2007 2:31:14 PM , Rating: 2
That's a good point, and I wonder how that works, commercially. For the big players that turn over inventory fast, maybe it's no problem at all, since they are probably receiving weekly or daily re-stocks at new pricing levels. And maybe for the smaller operators, the pre-announced price cuts are sufficient notice for them to manage their inventory so they don't get stuck. Anybody know for sure how this works out?

By mmcdonalataocdotgov on 7/24/2007 10:58:34 AM , Rating: 2
It also depends on when they purchased their current inventory and for how much. If they purchased it all at $1000 per unit, and they are still holding it, then they are not going to be able to sell it at the new price until they purchase new inventory at the lower price. So shop elsewhere. Eventually they may have to take a loss to move it. Pity them.
