Sony shows mobile phone connectivity with PlayStation Home (Source: Kotaku)
Sony shows mobile phone running XMB

Following Jack Tretton’s skit with Chewbacca in introducing the new PSP hardware revision, Phil Harrison of Sony Worldwide took the stage to talk about the PlayStation Network and PlayStation Home.

As part of his demonstration for PlayStation Home, Harrison took a Sony Ericsson mobile from his jacket pocket to show the phone running the Xross Media Bar (XMB) – the interface used to navigate functionality on the PSP and PS3.

Harrison used the phone to take a photograph of the crowd to his right, and minutes later during a walkthrough of his virtual apartment, the photo appeared on the wall of a virtual room. This was used as an example of how PlayStation Home will automate certain aspects of social networking as part of the experience. Harrison also pointed out that users of PlayStation Home will have full access to all of the PS3 console’s functions and capabilities while in the virtual world application.

Furthering PlayStation Home’s aim to inject the PS3 with social networking aspects is the reveal of an automatically generated website, resembling MySpace – specific to each user – that mirrors the personal content of each personal space. The PlayStation Home user website will be viewable via any regular web browser, said Harrison.

PlayStation Home was first unveiled at the Games Developer Conference during March. The service is currently operating in a closed beta and is slated for launch this October.

What ever happened to the good ol' days when there were actual games for a console?
SOny has been in the habit of sucking.

They're still there. You don't have to use Home, it's just an extra feature.

although I will say I hate myspace too, well I don't hate it I don't use it.

To add on to the comment about games, Sony totally impressed this E3 any non=fanboy and fairly objective fanboy can agree to that. The games appear to be finally coming sheesh. Staring with Lair next month.

Speak for yourself. The age of having a game console just play games is old news. Just like everything else, game consoles need to evolve to survive. Microsoft gets this, thats my you can download movies and tv shows to your 360 and stream from your computer. Sony obviously gets this too. Consoles need to grow up, you better start growing up too or you'll get left behind.

Nice idea

I like the idea of having an automatic web page for my photo's that are viewable for other people on the internet.

All for one

This is pretty neat, and Sony is proving that their system is a multi-functional unit capable of meetign most entertainment and communcation needs. Now, when (not if) the PSPhone comes out Sony will have a complete mobile solution that is untouchable. $180 for a phone that plays movies, music, photos, real games, has Internet access, and connects to the home entertainment all-in-one. Great strategy for Sony.

"So, I think the same thing of the music industry. They can't say that they're losing money, you know what I'm saying. They just probably don't have the same surplus that they had." -- Wu-Tang Clan founder RZA
