New PSPs in piano black, ice silver and ceramic white (Source: SCEA)

Chewie shows off the new Star Wars PSP (Source: Joystiq)
New PSP hardware is slimmer, lighter and outputs video to external displays

SCEA CEO Jack Tretton is the new frontman for PlayStation happenings in North America. However, it was former America Chief Kaz Hirai, now president of SCEI, who briefly took the stage at Sony’s E3 press conference to announce and show a slimmer and lighter PlayStation Portable system.

When Hirai first unveiled the new PSP hardware he was holding it appeared nearly indistinguishable from the current iteration, but the SCEI head assured the crowd that the improvements will be immediately apparent once the device is in our hands.

The new PSP is 33 percent lighter and 19 percent thinner, though the rest of the handheld’s dimensions appear to remain mostly status quo. Another considerable change is a more efficient battery. However, how much of an improvement over the current PSP battery was not detailed. Hirai also said the new PSP would load games faster, presumably with an improved UMD drive. Unchanged are the size of the LCD display and button layout.

The most notable change from a functionality standpoint is the addition of video output capabilities. The new hardware can output video to an external display, such as a television, for all media. At the conference, Sony demonstrated playback of a Spider-Man movie trailer played on the PSP, which was switched in real-time to displaying on the big projection screen inside the theatre. The video output may also be used for displaying photos and playing games on an external display.

Jack Tretton then reclaimed center stage to debut a silver-colored PSP, which will be available alongside the piano-black model. Tretton also introduced special guest Chewbacca onto the stage to help him announced a special Star Wars-themed PSP with an image of Darth Vader printed on the back.

The Star Wars PSP will comprise one of two new PSP bundles for North America. The Star Wars pack will include the special-themed hardware along with the Star Wars: Battlefront Renegade Squadron game. The second new PSP bundle will include the new hardware, including the silver-colored PSP, the game Daxter, a 1GB memory stick Duo, and a Family Guy Freakin’ Sweet Collection UMD. Both bundles will retail for $199.

Sony says that the new PSP will be released in North America in October, but didn’t offer any launch details for other regions.

Word of a slimmer and lighter PSP first came straight from the mouth of Sony UK boss Ray Maguire. The executive said in March the current PSP hardware would just be the “first iteration” of the handheld. Later that month, Maguire retracted his earlier comments, saying at that time, “there is no next iteration of the PSP.”

In April, sales of the PSP jumped following Sony’s official price drop of the core package down to $169. In June, new PSP and PS3 system software enabled Remote Play, allowing owners of both consoles to access media from home via any Internet access point. Sony also released new developer tools that allow game makers to unlock the full potential of the PSP’s processor, going from 222 to 333MHz.

What kinda output is the video output? Composite? Component? VGA? DVI? S-Video? Proprietary Ken Katuragi Legacy 'Mortgage Your House to Afford It But It's Worth It' Port?

No idea, but it's a good addition. I can think of a number of occasions that I've wanted to hook mine up to something capable of a bigger picture.

I assume it's an analog VGA port.

isn't the PSP's screen limited to 480x272? so one would assume that all UMD movies/games are encoded/rendered at that resolution; and thus, it would look crap on your shiny new HDTV. it would probably look crap on a regular TV, too.

unless, of course, they included some sort of upscaling hardware/software; but surely they would have mentioned that and bragged about it if it were in there.

Probably would look fine on a Standard TV as its only 640x480 anyways.

UMD movies are encoded in 720x480 so on your shiny HDTV it'll look pretty nice.
Also the PSP can play movies encoded in standard mpeg4 and AVC at 720x480 and 320x240(but why not 640x480?) so it will also fit SDTV's, with that you don't have to go out and buy UMD movies and use what you have already.

I find s-video/composite more likely. VGA doesn't count as TV Out. Very few TVs have VGA.

Even new HDTVs don't, just composite, s-video, component and HDMI.

I have seen some pics of the new psp, it has an RCA jack for the TV output.

I had been waiting for this announcement for a long time, but I'm a a little disappointed that the release date isn't until October.

Also, what's up with the Star Wars edition? "Ooh, ooh, I get a battery cover with Darth Vader on it!" Yippee? Nah, I don't think so. (At least you get a game with it, though.

Perhaps Star Wars edition PSP is Sony's reply to Microsoft's Halo edition Xbox 360...or not. Either way the new PSP renditions look pretty slick I have to admit, and that package deal also sounds sweet.

Yeah, the family guy bundle seems like a much better deal. A memory stick and a Family Guy UMD are worth as much as a Vader stencil?

since they released these second generation ones, or the second revisions, they will make sure on hacking will happen to these new ones now. well who knows, my current psp is fine, but scratched. if price is still at 169 then i may buy even tho i know that it is garunteeded that i cant hack it. now y wont Sony just make a PSP Phone? instead of putting ur ear on it like the iPhone, you can just use a blue tooth headset...that would be sweet

I'll Buy One
By johnbuk on 7/13/2007 12:24:45 PM , Rating: 2
I guess I'm one of the few people who has a PSP and loves it. I travel a lot and it's gotten more play from me than any other game system since the SNES.

It's multi-media capabilities aren't perfect, but before the PSP came out I used to travel with a portable DVD player, MP3 player, GBA, and a laptop. The only device that the PSP hasn't replaced is the laptop and if they ever came out with a keyboard accessory, the PSP might replace my laptop on some trips (if all I was going to use the laptop to do on the trip was surf the web).

I'll buy a PSP Slim for 2 reasons:
1) Darkalex has retired and I'm not about to stop using his custom firmware on my current PSP. So I'll buy this one with the intent of not using it for any homebrew and keep my old one for homebrew.
2) Sitting on a hotel bed watching a movie on a PSP can cause neck pain, so the ability to output to a TV would be something that I would definitely use.

Would be cool

if they could have some easily custom-designable cases...

I'd love to put a nice picture of a smashed DS on mine.

Whats the point in not being bothered with these products, if the site you are on is 'dailytech-nology'.

Does it not fit in?

Perhaps what you want is 'daily-pc' or something like that.

Yes you are literally the ONLY person that doesn't give a "woot" about these products.

If you've come to expect "shoddy" reporting from DT, then I don't know why you'd still be here. And yet, here you are. There must be some reason.
I would like all the facts to be accurate, as well, but mistakes happen. And crying about them just makes you look pathetic.

In effect you uncriticized the reporting since you separated witting and spelling and claimed both were "shoddy".
If the site is in the business of reporting then writing is what they do.
You might not have criticized what they report but you certainly did the means by which they do it.

Didn't you ever learn in school about constructive criticism? I was taught that people respond better to that than to thinkly veiled sarcasm...

Marcus's poor writing skills. . .
Your poor reading skills. . .

Perchance, did you guys go to the same school? ;)

Tried constructive criticism before with Marcus, as have others. He just doesn't care. Some other DT writers will thank a person who points out a typo and make a note of it's correction. Marcus changed his mistake without any acknowledgement and modded my post down. Real classy.

Yea because you can't possibly play a video game with only one analog stick/pad...

RE: Booo
By Circle T on 7/11/2007 10:42:07 PM , Rating: 4
But, where are most of the games for PSP being ported from?? Thats right, the PS2. And what does the PS2 have that the PSP does not?? Thats right, a second analog input, and 2 shoulder buttons. And clickable analog sticks, if you want to get technical.

So, you end up with games that not only have to be trimmed and cut to go from DVD down to UMD. You also have to try and shoehorn a game that was made with the possibility for 10 buttons, 2 analog sticks, and a d-pad, down to 6 buttons, 1 analog stick, and a terrible d-pad.

But really, the analog nub that is on the current PSP is f'n horrible, so I'm kind of glad they didn't add another one. And really, a video output for the PSP?? If I want to sit at home and play a game, I'll play it on my PS2. I mean, there is a 99% chance the game started there anyway. Taking a PORTABLE system and strapping it down seems very counter to the whole idea.

RE: Booo
By Parhel on 7/12/2007 12:45:30 AM , Rating: 2
I think the video output is a nice addition. I mean, you don't have to use it if you don't want to.

RE: Booo
By Circle T on 7/12/2007 1:40:04 AM , Rating: 2
I'm not saying its not a nice addition. More features are better than less. And being able to play videos and show pictures and stuff like that on a TV is fine. But, at its core, it seems to me like they are simply adding stuff just to get another check mark in the "features" column.

RE: Booo
By Goty on 7/12/2007 1:34:58 AM , Rating: 3
The games aren't ported, the PSP would be woefully underpowered if it tried to play even terribly dumbed down versions of games on the PS2. I haven't played a game yet on the PSP where I've wished for a second analog stick or two more shoulder buttons, either.

RE: Booo
By Circle T on 7/12/2007 1:57:03 AM , Rating: 2
No, they really are. The hardware of the two systems is very close in spec. Both with 300mhz processors, both with 32MB of RAM. The PS2 does have 4MB of video RAM, to the PSP's 2MB though.

But, even though the PS2 does have a decent edge with raw pixel pushing power, it needs it. The PSP only needs to drive a set 480x272 resolution. Not a 640x480 resolution for TV. Thats a good deal less resolution to have to deal with.

I mean, look at basically every highly rated game on the system. They are all just a portable version of a game already on the PS2. You've got Metal Gear, Burnout, GTA, Syphon Filter...the list goes on. About the only rarity in there is Lumines.

And, the reason you probably haven't wished for another analog nub is because the one they already have is terrible. So, first order of business would be make a better one. Then worry about getting another one on there.

RE: Booo
By rdeegvainl on 7/12/2007 7:48:38 AM , Rating: 1
Metal gear, syphon filter and GTA were all on the Playstation though. so you list is a little misleading.

RE: Booo
By Circle T on 7/12/2007 11:14:53 AM , Rating: 2
No, my list, and your reply, confirms what I was saying. I'm not talking about ports from other brands, like Nintendo and MS. I'm saying, aside from Lumines, which is fantastic, almost all of the other big hit titles on PSP are just a rehash and trimmed down PS2 game. And if thats all I'm getting, I'll just play it on PS2.

I understand they aren't always the EXACT same game. But, many times, they are. And, I don't want that. I don't need 2 systems to play basically the same games. I like my DS because it has tons of fun games that I can't get anywhere else. But, aside from Lumines, which I love, and still play quite a lot, there isn't many stand out games for PSP.

RE: Booo
By onereddog on 7/18/2007 1:45:11 AM , Rating: 2
GTA worked out perfectly fine on PSP without the second analog stick.
And your spec sheet comparison is pretty thread bear, I had a computer with similar specs, it doesn't mean its the same as the PS2.

Why?
Seems like a pretty good use. People take their PSP on car trips, in bigger screen (even at lower quality) is always welcome.
And the head position could prove to be more comfortable.
