RD790 to gain triple and quad CrossFire capabilities

AMD is preparing to update its aging 580X chipset later this year with the upcoming RD790. The upcoming RD790 serves double duty as the single and dual processor platform of choice for AMD desktop products. RD790 introduces 41 PCIe 2.0 lanes to AMD’s Socket AM2+ platform for Stars-family processors.

Motherboard manufacturers can distribute the PCIe lanes in many configurations, including four PCIe 2.0 x16 slots with eight-lane signaling. With all 41 PCIe 2.0 lanes, the RD790 chipset has a TDP up to 10-watts. AMD roadmaps reveal the multiple PCIe 2.0 slots are used for an improved CrossFire multi-GPU technology. The improved CrossFire multi-GPU technology supports up to four ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT graphics cards in Quad CrossFire configurations.

Unlike NVIDIA’s SLI, which supports dual or quad graphics cards in SLI, the improved CrossFire solution can take on three cards for improved performance. AMD claims CrossFire scaling with three cards yields a 2.6x performance increase. Two cards in CrossFire yield a 1.8x performance improvement. AMD roadmaps do not divulge how well CrossFire scales with four GPUs.

Expect RD790 to arrive later this year in time for the AMD Phenom product launch in single and dual processor configurations.

what are you onabout??

the gtx uses more power than the 2900xt in some cases i have read many reviews stateing this, AMD just had to patch a leaking roof with the r600 and get it out the door, it was late because the merge was in progress, thats why everything is late. there are a few flaws with the r600 gpu the lack of texture power for a start, dammit know all about and will be fixed in the next revision, if the shaders and texture units were clocked higher it would thrash the gtx hands down, but its not possible because the gpu will generate to much heat.

...if the shaders blah blah... will be fixed in next revision blah blah...
another ati user mantra - IF it was like that, IF they did this, it WILL be fixed Real Soon Now, yada yada yada...

well, who ze duck cares about "what IF"? 2900xt is a card for losers anyway, hot and slow, why buy it unless you're an ati zealot? 8800 GTS 320 is cheaper, and runs most games real great, and there is GTS 640 for the same price and speed as ati but way more energy efficient, and there is mighty GTX and ubermighty Ultra that smacks ati and pisses on it. no, really, why you guys buy this 2900xt stuff? any sober reasons besides being ati lover?

I mean I could have missed something important here, maybe I'm wrong about GTS 640 and 320 - please correct me, where am I wrong?

ati losers and zealots can pass by, no need to waste your time answering me - there is this rate down link, see? press it and pass along. thanks, bye.

I'd like to see a sober answer from cool minded user who has no love or preference for ati and nvidia

Other than not really needing the uber card, I prefer to support the under dog. Plus my MB is ATI. Dunno, I would rather stick to the same manufacturer. Just little things, but, mind you, I am not trying to build the biggest fastest mean machine either.

Other than that no real reason.

If you are looking to build the biggest baddest machine it would be a C2D with the 8800 cards and all that or you can build one for 1/4 the price and refresh it 4 times as often.

One way requires more cash up front and gives burst performance with pricier tech upgrades (gotta buy the biggest and best to keep up, else you penis will shrink) or you can just be average with average performance and not have to do something deviant like look at someone else's wang when standing next to them at the urinals, just so you know how much PC hardware to buy to make yours grow.

Be a tweeker and make your system run as sweet as you wanna spend and be happy. But, don't even think to try and brow beat everyone into following in your footsteps. Some of us actually use our computers for work. We are not 26 living with Mom and tossing our whole pay checks at our PC's so we can pwnz at CS anymore.
