AMD RD790 naked shot (Source: HKEPC)
RD790 to gain triple and quad CrossFire capabilities

AMD is preparing to update its aging 580X chipset later this year with the upcoming RD790. The upcoming RD790 serves double duty as the single and dual processor platform of choice for AMD desktop products. RD790 introduces 41 PCIe 2.0 lanes to AMD’s Socket AM2+ platform for Stars-family processors.

Motherboard manufacturers can distribute the PCIe lanes in many configurations, including four PCIe 2.0 x16 slots with eight-lane signaling. With all 41 PCIe 2.0 lanes, the RD790 chipset has a TDP up to 10-watts. AMD roadmaps reveal the multiple PCIe 2.0 slots are used for an improved CrossFire multi-GPU technology. The improved CrossFire multi-GPU technology supports up to four ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT graphics cards in Quad CrossFire configurations.

Unlike NVIDIA’s SLI, which supports dual or quad graphics cards in SLI, the improved CrossFire solution can take on three cards for improved performance. AMD claims CrossFire scaling with three cards yields a 2.6x performance increase. Two cards in CrossFire yield a 1.8x performance improvement. AMD roadmaps do not divulge how well CrossFire scales with four GPUs.

Expect RD790 to arrive later this year in time for the AMD Phenom product launch in single and dual processor configurations.

so will 3xradeon 2900's then actually outperform 2x8800GTX's?

and at what cost? and what about the inevitable driver issues/compatibility problems?

it's nice to see AMD do something, and maybe in the professional rendering market this may make a difference, but for most regular guys this means nothing at all; investing $1200+ now seems stupid especially when a newer, faster graphics card is always just 6 to 8 months away.

nope, just higher resolutions for the "professional" rendering market.

those things better come with their own power station and refrigeration unit and a sucker to buy them

well it depends on which game and which api

if it's call of juarez dx 10 it already does with two no need for three

hell it beat's the ultra with max settings (hdr correct anti aa)

at higher res its within 4 frames at the highest resolutions

http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3029...

as for price two ultra's cost 1400

read the article stu boy

does two 2900xt's beat the gtx yes

why does it beat the ultras in (HDR correct anti aa )

because no 8800 series will run at the above mentioned max settings

so go change your green underwear and hope the high failure rate of the 680i chipset doesn't touch you

or if you want to play call of juarez be prepared to turn it down from the max settings

no, it's because techland wouldn't bother to implement that technique in the way that works efficiently on both nv and ati chips. sorry to pour some rain on your ati parade, but once techland fixes that - the only dx10 game that artificially inflates ati score in dx10 benches will disappear, I'm afraid

then what would you do with your shiny new triple 2900xt setup, besides cooking your eggs&bacon on it of course?

slap nvidia users with it? maybe :) or use it as a paperweight, or (the best!) sell them to other ati losers, there are crowds of them around - just look at my rating going down - they are pouring in, whoooshhh... what a flow! :)

I love it

all I have to do is wait,

the ATI gpu is more flexible and if you keep reading the review's after the inital release you can see the gap closing (driver optimization)

the HD 2900 series was always supposed to be at 65nm according to roadmaps do you think they aren't still working on it

and personally all my parts are eventually moved down to my HTPC so heat and noise is always a factor to me thats why I never run NVIDIA chipsets they haven't had decent thermals since NFORCE3

and that whole pay extra for substandard pure video crap moved me away from their video cards

and they never seem to play nice with my tuners either

any way time for the commute home I'll have to complete my tirade later

regards

well you should understand there are currently 3 dx10 games

one a game performance only api move (lost planet)

1. call of juarez favors ATI (and yes there is api impelementation dispute between Techland and NVIDIA)

2. company of heroes DX10 patch favors nvidia

all the reviewers pan lost planet calling it a poor clunkie port xbox console game

so nividia has a massive one game lead

aren't they also having trouble with vista 64 somthing about open gl not functioning at all

I will give you across the board best DX9 performace ever but I think its supposed to be a DX10 card where there is no crushing dominance either

which purchase is the most future proof is it easier to code with the ATI slant (call of juarez ) or the NVIDIA slant (company of heroes)

Its really early in the DX10 game to even try to call a winner

in hardware winner today, loser tomorrow

nvidia 8800GTX/Ultra cards are 1) somewhat faster in general 2) somewhat more expensive because of that 3) came out much earlier 4) much more energy efficient

I call it a winner for today ;)

Actually, two 2900XTs do not beat "a single" 8800 GTX. Put down that red kool-aid!

I hope you realize a large majority of people still have 19" LCDs locked at 1280x1024 resolution. Not everyone can afford 21" Dell widescreens with 1920x1200 resolution.

I just recently got a 22" Viewsonic widescreen with 1680x1050 resolution. Before that I was on a 19" LCD.

So move to the USA. If you don't like it here, get the funk out. We don't need you. Don't let the border hit your ass on the way out.

And let me give you a piece of advice my father gave me when I left home: "Don't come back."

You lost me... Your mad at Canada because you don't know how to shop online?

Try this:

With the 7% currency conversion it works out to the same price so what gives?

You are one sad little boy.
Why not get this drive instead: http://www.shoprbc.com/ca/shop/product_details.php... <--- Seagate 7200.10 16MB Cache SATA2 - $125CDN

And Canada is not a commie infested Bureaucratic hell hole. The country has it's problems but they pale when compared to the problems faced by many Americans (especially those without health insurance).

Be thankful for what you have. If you don't like the way things are going get politically involved and work to change things. Dissent is a vital part of a Democratic society.

because I want that samsung since I'm building silent PC. you remind me of some mac zealots who keep saying "why you like this windows app, there is this nice mac app, use it instead, who cares if it's different from what you need?"
quote:

at lest in america there is a CHOICE, you can funnel all your money into insurance if you want, but in canada there is no way to buy decent insurance - it's ILLEGAL to have quality fast and paid medical service here, and 9-month wait lines for specialists are for absolutely EVERYBODY (except canadian government with their private clinics, of course). well, unless you pay a visit to the south, where these fast services at least exist
quote:
If you don't like the way things are going get politically involved and work to change things
yeah, right, soviet union was exactly the same - you visit, say, germany, see how people live here, realize that your country is a stinking noisy ugly pig house compared to that. then you come back and start telling people - hey, I've been there, would you believe how they live? lemme tell ya - and THEN they look at you, totally puzzled, and ask what kind of dope you've been smoking, don't you realize all people must be EQUAL, there should be NO RICH at all, money is bad, you have to live like government lets you live, don't ask for more, or, well, go to the local municipality and express your dissent... well, they'll lock you up in an asylum, 'cause you MUST BE totally out of your mind if you dare to say things like our country is not the best one in the world.

you know the word for that? it's called brainwashing

shit, this is something I totally DID NOT expect coming here. I escaped from commies, and voila! SAME commies here, whould you freakin believe this??? they tell me the SAME story here, that everybody MUST BE equal, paying your own money for healthcare is BAD BAD BAD, this is why it is illegal and it must stay illegal forever, and you should live the way our generous best in the world canadian government lets you live, don't ask for more, YOU CAN'T SPEND YOUR MONEY THE WAY YOU WANT, period. shit, this is EXACTLY THE SAME thing they were telling us in soviet union, I can't freakin believe this...

man, that's not right, and I found a bunch of other ugly bureaucratic things here very much like those in soviet union - like to get drivers license there's a wait time of about a YEAR (it's just a couple of weeks or so in California), automotive insurance is $300 a month here and just $50 in california, banks here give you some shitty debit card while american banks give you proper Visa check card - totally different level of service and convenience...

you know, it's like a difference between windows and mac os x, that mac users like to talk about - os x is like windows, agreed, BUT! there are these tiny little details in os x, and the devil is in the details!

Wow... you need help.
Here's the deal. European Western Democracies as well as Canada have a lot in common. The United States used to have a lot in common with us as well. WE're all.. wait for it.. LIBERAL Democratic countries. The founding fathers of the United States of America were Rebels, Liberals and Patriots who wanted to be free from the Conservative Imperialism of England at the time.

How things have changed.

How do you have more choice in the USA? YOU DON'T unless you have a lot of $$$.

There are wait times in Canada for non-life threatening surgeries, but if you're life is in danger it's instant. In the USA, if your life is in Danger, Insurance companies often won't cover you (if it's too expensive) or you can't get treatment if you don't have the Cash.

The number one reason for bankruptcies in the USA is for Medical Bills.

Learn a little, I have seeing as I'm a dual citizen. America is a great country and if taken by it's constitution, Declaration of Independence and Bill of Rights probably the best country on earth. Sadly this is no longer the case. Neo-Conservatives and Neo-Liberals have corrupted it's politics. So much so that Americans don't even know who to trust anymore (politician wise).

PS.. here's your drive:
http://www.laurier.com/index.php/Products/view_pro... <-- $140CDN
http://www.razorcomputers.ca/product_info.php?cPat... <-- $136CDN

Learn to do research.. both on your politics and your hardware searches.

PS.. Automotive insurance in California is government subsidized (I thought you hated so called "commies").

In Canada.. it's full out Capitalist. But there aren't many companies competing so you're stuck paying $300/mth (probably because you're 16yrs old).

Also the $50/mth in California is what an adult pays btw (not a teenager).

A CF of 2900XTs are already more powerful than an Sli of GTXs, Crossfire is a faster and more efficient solution than SLi.
