PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 Elite to share price in Canada - but which is the better value?

Along with the U.S. price drop, Canadian retailers have also been instructed by Sony to reduce the price of the 60GB PlayStation 3 to $549 – the level previously occupied by the 20GB version.

Platformers.net is carrying a leaked upcoming flyer image from Best Buy showing the PlayStation 3 selling at $549, representing a $110 price drop.

Earlier this year, Canadian retailers even raised the price of the PlayStation 3 from the initial $549 and $659 – for the 20GB and 60GB, respectively – to $599 and $699.

Interestingly enough, the upcoming Canadian price of the PlayStation 3 after its drop will be exactly on the same level as the Xbox 360 Elite, which also retails for $549.

It is unclear if Microsoft will change the pricing on its Xbox 360 Elite model in Canada to reflect the position of its U.S. counterpart. In the U.S., the Xbox 360 Elite sells for $20 less than the new PlayStation 3 price.

Although more storage space is almost always welcomed, the Canadian market benefits significantly less from the added 100GB on the Xbox 360 Elite’s 120GB hard disk drive. U.S. gamers have access to a decent library of movies and TV shows on Xbox Live Marketplace, but Xbox Live accounts in Canada have no such service.

What's so odd about one news report coming out several days after another one? Since they are from completely different sources about fairly different events, I don't see anything odd here.

Oh, wait, one hits a nerve for you since it doesn't look good for your favorite toy. They other is good news for their competitor. Hmm, seems to me you are letting your preferences color you ability to parse dates.

Claiming that DT has a pro-Sony bias is about as laughable a comment as you could post here. Enjoy your 360 and I hope you find a good way to recycle all those shipping cartons you'll be receiving from the Microsoft service center over the next two years.

Whats even odder is that over the weekend Microsoft extended the warranty due to an unacceptable rate of failures. They must be in on the conspiracy to sell more PS3's!!

Those dates are just when DT reported the stories.

Let's just say they're not quite up to date most of the time. Bit-Tech reported the same failure rate story on June 26th !
