Xbox 360 Elite is black
Japan to get upgraded Xbox 360 in October

The Xbox 360 Elite is set to launch in Japan on October 11, months after the North American release.

The improved version of the Xbox 360 console, with the added features of HDMI output and a 120GB hard drive, is distinguished from its previous, lesser versions by an all-black finish and matching accessories. The Xbox 360 Elite model launched in the U.S. in late April and in Canada in early May.

“Xbox 360 Elite joins the ranks of our Core and Pro offerings that provide consumers with the flexibility to purchase the version of Xbox that best fits their unique needs,” said Peter Moore, the head of Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business, for the U.S. launch. “Xbox 360 Elite joins the ranks of our Core and Pro offerings that provide consumers with the flexibility to purchase the version of Xbox that best fits their unique needs.”

Although Japanese gamers have to wait Xbox 360 Elite much longer for the upgraded console to arrive, they will be getting a considerable break on the price over their North American counterparts. The Xbox 360 Elite is set to retail in Japan for 47,800 yen, or about $389. In the U.S., the Xbox 360 Elite retails for $479.

It remains to be seen whether or not the improved features or relatively better value price of the Xbox 360 Elite will be enough to entice Japanese gamers to Microsoft’s console – which so far is ineffective in that country. Sales of Xbox 360 in Japan appear to be boosted by only the release of Japanese-made RPGs such as Blue Dragon and Trusty Bell/Eternal Sonata.

Not sure of release date for EU. But 65nm production suppose to start in August, and be used in productions in new machines by September.

This is a great point. Why is MS ignoring the EU and AUS. The X360 actually has a pretty loyal following in these two regions. The Elite would make be a bigger splash there than in Japan that's for sure, especially in the EU where HD-DVD appears to be taking off.

MS pull your head out. You are making three critical mistakes.

First, make all X360s the Elite configuration (i.e. better chipset configuration, HDMI, quieter DVD drive).

Second, eliminate the Core version and price drop the Pro $249.99, Elite to $379.99 (alternative, keep the price on the Elite the same, but include a game and some XBLA DLs), and globally drop the price of the external HD-DVD drive to $119.99.

HD-DVD drive @ $119.99
+ Elite @ $379.99
---------------------------
= $599.98 ($0.01 cheaper than the PS3).

Third, fix the manufacturing issues at the design level, quickly (read "now").

The drive is the same on the elite and the core/premium. It's loud.
The 360, in my opinion, (if you don't get a lemon) is pretty much amazing. The graphics are almost up to par with the PS3 with a much better software catalog.
