Yeah but I can buy a RAZR phone for $150 without a plan. The bulk of phones sold are fairly modest ones -- moving 500k iphones on a weekend is pretty incredible considering they cost more than a PSP, XBOX360, and Wii put together when you factor in the network costs.

As for competing in Europe, the current incarnation would probably suffer pretty poorly considering the wealth of 3g feature phones available from other carriers. But I believe another revision would do well, considering the predisposition towards advanced phones and affluence of many countries in Europe, especially the UK, and the status the phone would convey.

If it included 3g and perhaps some standard features (cut+paste) that we are used to, I think it would pave the way for a slew of consumer smartphones.

I don't think it will wow the world audience. I have heard of phones from japan and other places with the same type of functionality(minus the fluid interface) existing for years. i think that the options available to the more vigorous technological adoptive societies will wash this out. Not to mention I highly agree with the more advanced 3g technologies playing a major role in eastern markets. however, it looks like they captured the American market this last weekend. bravo
