Full range if iPhone accessories
Apple opens the flood gates for iPhone accessories

While Apple's much-hyped iPhone isn't due to launch until 6PM this evening, Apple has already given us a taste of what to expect when it comes to iPhone accessories.

The most prominent iPhone accessory is the Bluetooth headset. The black unit features a single button for making/receiving calls and provides 5.5 hours of talk time and 72 hours of standby time with its lithium-ion battery. The Bluetooth headset comes bundled with an iPhone Dual Dock (charges both the iPhone and the headset) along with a Bluetooth Travel Cable and is priced at $129.

The iPhone Dual Dock can be purchased separately for $49. A separate iPhone Dock (without a port for charging the Bluetooth headset) can also be had for $49.

Other accessories available include a $29 USB power adapter, $19 Dock Connector to USB Cable, $29 Bluetooth Travel Cable and a $29 Stereo headset.

Apple's prices are a bit on the high side when it comes to accessory prices, but rest assured that eBay will be flooded with relatively cheap 3rd-party accessories within the coming months.

$129 for an Apple Bluetooth device?

I'll bet Steve Jobs has asked his Customer Service team to replace their quote on their email signatures.

Now it reads: "Apple. Grab your ankles."

Ah, Southwestern Bell Wireless/Cingular has always had the $36.50 activation fee. Sometimes they had specials where it was waived. A Southwestern Bell/SBC home landline always had a $36.50 activation fee.

The activation fees, along with taxes on your monthly bill, are costs left over from the early days of telecom.

You ever think what it took to completely wire the entire country, and the fact that this was really done by a single company, AT&T? Or that AT&T built and operates most of the trans-atlantic/pacific telecom lines?

That's were those charges come from. I don't know if they are actually still "costs" today. I mean, it's possible they are still paying off loans. I'm not sure—but that's where they originated from anyway.

You are wrong. You are thinking of Sprint, who still owns and operates all three of the major transatlantic cables. Sprint, or Southern Pacific Rail and Information Telecom, previously Bell (as in Alexander Ghram Bell, Pac Bell) merged with Souther Pacific Rail....
Anyhow, AT&T owns about 22% of the phone lines in American Neighborhoods and 15% of the wireless towers. However, Sprint owns about 88% of the fiber optic data trunks in the US...
Under Railroads turns out to be the best place to run thos big cables. They already own the realestate. That was the reason for their acquisition of Bell in 1978. MCI et all were having trouble running data lines, while Southern Pacific already owned all of the land it needed, in huge swathes connecting every major city and town in the USA.

So actually, taking on your Iphone to someone more than 2 counties away, your AT&T call is being transfered over Sprint Optics, rented out to all the major carriers (verizon, boost, metro, cricket etc.

Activation fees probably are partially left over from when it took more than ten seconds of computer access to set one up (even when porting old phone numbers). Rest might be a deterrent for people switching vendors, especially for the pay-as-you-go plans where there is no contractual "stay" incentive.

Yes, the system was built by AT&T, they were the national monopoly who built and owned everything including your phone (which you had to rent from them if you wanted one). Some of the post-breakup baby bells have been joining back up together though.

Don't know about the Atlantic, but I know there are a number of trans-pacific optical bundles that are non-ATT ones. Verizon has announced the building of yet another one. And I suspect the newer ones handle more traffic than the old ones could even dream of.

We signed up with Cingular/ATT recently and was charged the $36 plus another $26 for the second phone, and we already had our own phones (unlocked, bought for international use). It's a standard charge. T-mobile, the local GSM alternative, had similar charges.

what is the $1400 for? 2 years of service?

Multi-charger base alone for the BlackBerry Pearl is $109 and the stylized bluetooth headset is $139, so $129 for the iPhone dual-charger and headset seem reasonable in that context.

Just a thought.

...since quite a few people have an iPod, they'd save a few bucks sharing a couple of those "accessories" between the two devices. Couldn't they have included some of those in the box...? Youch.

If they can get people to line up to spend $600 for a phone, then I say let the prices on the accessories have the sky as the limit.

Maybe Sony should have called it the iPS3, then it would have sold out.

if it was named iPS3, then it wouldn't sell half as many units...then steve jobs or one of his associates would say something along the lines of "if you can find an iPS3 thats been on the shelf for more than a day, I'll give you $2000 for it!"

Agreed, one would have to assume that the phone came with a charger. Can anybody confirm this? That would be nuts if it didn't lol.

I'd guess that the iPhone does come with a simple wall-socket charger. If you want a car charger, it will be extra. And the fancy iPhone docks will also be extra.

That Apple continues in its quest to overcharge you for everything.

$130 for essentially a charger and a headset. Are they f*ing nuts?

And then it seems you have to buy the Dock Connector to USB cable to plug it into your PC while it charges. Could be wrong but from the description of the cable, thats what it seems to imply. So $150 just to charge your phone and headset, and transfer files from your PC while it does it.

Nope. They;re genius. Fucking nuts would be the people that buy it.

Those already come with the phone. You don't have to buy extra ones. Do you think they would actually ship the iPhone without an AC adapter, USB cord, and AC adapter?

One of those "AC adapter" should be "dock" :)

What type of connector/plug does the iPhone use? Is it the same as the very thin one found on the iPod? If so, then yes, many of the iPod's accessories could carry over. Since all of the iPod's accessories are terribly expensive it'd be nice to save some money.

Same. Reportedly there are some issues though, which Apple is looking to solve.

Same connector? That was a good move. Makes it easier for alot of people.

Now if they drop the proce to $200 and offer CDMA version, I am in... LOL

There will be no CDMA version...part of the exclusivity deal with AT&T.

I know, I was being sarcastic.

I am sure at some point that contract ends though. I can't imagine 5-6 years from now, there are no Sprint/Verizon (or whatever their new merged/boughtout names will be by then. :)

I called 2 stores in Northern Virginia - one had 40 iphones and the other had 45. Each store had a line of about 15 people outside as of 1:30pm EST. Crazy.
