Epson and Philips team up to design personal projector for gamers and portable multimedia users

Seiko Epson Corp. and Royal Philips Electronics announced on Wednesday a joint venture design for a small, cost effective projector.  The two companies thus far released the joint reference design for the personal projector.

The aim for the personal projector veers away from the basic business and educational purposes and will be targeted towards video gaming and personal multimedia players.  The device will be a compromise between Philips Ujoy lamp-system and the Epson HTPS 3LCD panel, which is said by the companies to offer a bright picture and color-saturation and compactness required for the projector.

"With the ever shrinking sizes of key-components, new application domains for projection come in reach of the consumer" said Ney Corsino, VP Marketing at Philips Digital Projection Lighting. "The use of projection in conjunction with applications as diverse as game consoles, digital cameras, PDAs and MP4 players will create new, immersive consumer viewing experiences due to the large screen size framed within small, stylish and portable devices. Our Ujoy(R) lighting system is a very compact, low-power light source based on the well-known Philips innovative UHP(R) technology and is specifically designed for these applications."

The new HTPS TFT panel, dubbed the L3P045 Series, has 0.47 inch panel size at 800x600 (SVGA) pixels. It also has a 71% aperture ratio and 12nm pixel pitch.  The Ujoy lamp system specifications include a lifetime of 2000 hours, with an output power of 50 watts.  The lamp size is 43.5mm with length of 64mm and weighs 115g.  The driver size is 70x36x26mm.

No news has been released on the production schedule or estimated price of the unit.
