Sony adds a splash of color to its new 14.1" mainstream notebooks

Sony has introduced a new line of notebooks aimed at the mainstream market: the VAIO CR series. DailyTech first briefly mentioned the new Santa-Rosa-based notebooks back in early May when a scant number of specifications were leaked onto Sony's European product pages.

The new CR notebooks feature Core 2 Duo processors, Intel X3100 graphics, a 14.1" XBRITE-ECO LCD screen (1280x800), DVD burner and 802.11n wireless connectivity. Other features include a 3-in-1 media reader and ExpressCard slot along with the usual assortment of Firewire and USB 2.0 ports.

Sony will offer the CR notebooks in what it calls five "fashion-forward" colors: sangria, cosmopolitan, dove, indigo and black (matte finish). The notebooks will also have an LED light that pulsates when the machine is booting, shutting down or hibernating.

"Just like the car you drive, notebooks today are an extension of your personality" said Mike Abary, senior vice president of VAIO product marketing for Sony Electronics in the United States. "As such, users expect their PC to reflect their creativity and individuality, as well as handle their spreadsheets."

The 5.5-pound VAIO CR notebooks will be available at the end of the month with a starting price of $1,350 USD.

Way too much

I am not a Sony fanboy, or a Sony hater. I just consider myself a consumer without a specific brand preference.

However, with that being said, I cannot see anyone willing to cough up $1300+ dollars for this laptop - considering it really has no special features that you cannot find of a much lower priced Dell, Acer, etc. The colors are nice, sure...but its going to take alot more than some pretty plastic for me to side with this Sony notebook.

Then find me another laptop with LED backlighting, 13 inch screen, and the Santa Rosa chipset for much cheaper. None of that Celeron or old Pentium M crap.

I'd stay away from these just because every single person I know who had one complained of hardware problems, no matter what model. Now, that's only been about 6 people, but still that's one hell of a bad first impression.

User experience varries, our company deploys right around 120 Sony's mostly S and T series models. They have been more reliable than the HPs they replaced since 2005. My only complaint has been with the S360/S260s fan which is shrill and loud. That and the newer models come with perfectly flat keys which is less than optimal.

i dont believe it says anything about led backlighting... rather it does have a blinking led light.

Sony stuff is usually overpriced, but is extremely fashionable, and rarely do they cater to the sluggish bottom end of computers, which i appreciate.

I want to add that this CR VAIO laptop use the Sound Reality sound chip. The chip support DSD to deliver SACD quality sound. The 107dB SNR which is awesome in notebook.

In this price segment, if anyone picks one of these up over a ThinkPad T61, they're completely nuts.

These days not only are women tech oriented they're also fashion oriented and they also like to be gaudy compared to the male culture where tech sells and appearance is not too important. Notebooks styling all look the same these days and not very unique. Sony's heading in the right direction in trying to differentiate their product styling to capture the voguish crowd.
