DivX reveals new media streamer hardware
DivX, Inc. took its first steps into
the hardware industry this week with the not-so-formal introduction of the
GejBox;-) Media Streamer.
A post on the DivX Labs website announced
the beta tester signup for a secret project for streaming media.
Though the post does not directly indicate the GejBox is part of the
beta test, a posting on Engadget claims GejBox is indeed the secret project.
Engadget
describes the GejBox as a hardware DivX media center,
capable of wired or wireless video streaming across the network to a
television. Images of the GejBox reveal HDMI, Ethernet, optical audio and
composite interfaces. A coaxial WiFi interface is also clearly visible.
Other beta testers in the project
report the interface for the device includes a Google Video module in the
in-house dashboard. Virtually every file format is supported, including
Divx, JPG, MPEG, MP3, XViD and just about everything in between. However,
other testers have also confirmed with DailyTech that FairPlay support
is not included at this time.
The GejBox, named in honor of famed
DivX hacker Jerome Rota (a.k.a. Gej), is currently only a proof of concept for
beta testing. The company is currently soliciting hardware manufacturers
for mass production, though there is no guarantee such a device will make it to
U.S. shores in its current form. On the other hand, with few competitors to
AppleTV, we may see GejBox or more devices just like it sooner than later.
"Paying an extra $500 for a computer in this environment -- same piece of hardware -- paying $500 more to get a logo on it? I think that's a more challenging proposition for the average person than it used to be." -- Steve Ballmer
