DivX reveals new media streamer hardware

DivX, Inc. took its first steps into the hardware industry this week with the not-so-formal introduction of the GejBox;-) Media Streamer.

A post on the DivX Labs website announced the beta tester signup for a secret project for streaming media.   Though the post does not directly indicate the GejBox is part of the beta test, a posting on Engadget claims GejBox is indeed the secret project.

Engadget describes the GejBox as a hardware DivX media center, capable of wired or wireless video streaming across the network to a television. Images of the GejBox reveal HDMI, Ethernet, optical audio and composite interfaces.  A coaxial WiFi interface is also clearly visible.

Other beta testers in the project report the interface for the device includes a Google Video module in the in-house dashboard.  Virtually every file format is supported, including Divx, JPG, MPEG, MP3, XViD and just about everything in between.  However, other testers have also confirmed with DailyTech that FairPlay support is not included at this time.

The GejBox, named in honor of famed DivX hacker Jerome Rota (a.k.a. Gej), is currently only a proof of concept for beta testing.  The company is currently soliciting hardware manufacturers for mass production, though there is no guarantee such a device will make it to U.S. shores in its current form. On the other hand, with few competitors to AppleTV, we may see GejBox or more devices just like it sooner than later.

Not sure that'd be a good idea with the pending lawsuit right now. MPAA and RIAA would probably request access to your entire wired/wireless network! haha.

Wait, I thought they already had full access to anything and everything about a private citizens life, computer, and network that they wanted.

This just in ... RIAA and the MPPA have finally found a new way to embrace the digital age ... sell the government wiretapping access to any citizen under the guise of fighting piracy.

As opposed to the guise of fighting terrorism? lol

Dont you know that by buying or downloading pirated products you are directly supporting terrorism and contributing to the death and torture of millions? And that for every product you buy from the noble companies of the RIAA and MPAA, they donate double the value of your purchase to anti terrorism measures, such as violating your privacy?

Hey guys come on. I was joking. It's a DivX/XVid device after all.

maybe mentioning the word 'bit torrent' is considered sin now-a-days.

I would much rather support this Gejbox than anything by DRM Apple.

Hopefully in Production models though, the colors change to match home audio equiptment. Perhaps an all silver and all black models would be nicer in order to make everything match.

Now if only my LCD tv had wireless built in so that i can stream wirelessly from PC -> GejBox -> TV

I'm with you man. I'm definitely buying one of these when they come out. I've been waiting for this. The only possible competitor to this for my money is Cisco's device that comes out later this year. If it offers Divx playback I'll consider it too.

Finally my original Xbox will be able to rest in piece knowing that I have a suitable alternative. Or at the worst I'll just be able to move it to another TV.

That’s like saying mp3 is the official codec of music piracy. If mp3 was adopted as the standard music format I don't see why divx / xvid can't be the format for movies.

So if i own store bought DVD's and I rip them to my computer and encode them in Divx for a 700MB file instead of MPEG-2 at 4.7GB, im now a Pirate?

Divx, Mp3, Xvid, wma, wmv - they are all compression tools to keep the same quality and take up less disk space.

Either know what you are talking about and say it without making accusations, then maybe you wont sound like such as ass munch.

I have downloaded content from the past 10 yrs, i also have purchased back up material as well.

I dont have a problem with Apple the company, but I have a problem with them being very proprietary - which is why i will not buy sony either. They trashed the mini-disc, which would much superior to CD being that it was smaller and couldnt be scratched.

I like to have the freedom to do what i please, with what i own, encode it in what i want, and play it back however i feel.

Some say they want Apple. But i conclude that i want freedom.

Was proprietary. What's proprietary about H.264, AAC, and MPEG-4? They are standards. You even have fully open source, standards compliant encoders.

AppleTV is no more "proprietary" because it supports H.264 & AAC than this gizmo is because it supports DivX & MP3.

I've had a play with the Apple TV and think it's a great device, however as stated previously having to re-encode everything into Apple friendly format is a real pain.

And why were forced to do this is something i just can't undertstand! I mean if can install the DivX Codec for Quicktime to play xvid's & divx's with Avi extensions, why can't itunes also play them!

Come on Apple, let's change itunes to support DivX if the codec is present, if it's ok for quicktime, fairs fair

No component?

I realize the product isn't out yet, but I only see HDMI, S-Video, and composite... I'm pretty sure the majority of users out there have component inputs, not HDMI. Releasing it this way seems like a mistake. Unless their content providers won't allow HD programming to be viewed via analog connectors. Ugh.

What we really need is cheaper TV's and Receivers with multiple HDMI inputs & switching. A receiver for under $300 with maybe 3 or 4 HDMI inputs, and 1 HDMI output would work nicely.

Actually, I don't see why LCD's/Plasma's have multiple component inputs rather than multiple HDMI inputs. I mean, i know why - since the average person probably does not have HDMI HD cable box, HDMI dvd player - but who wants an LCD/Plasma hanging on the wall - with all these cords to go along with it?! Running 3 or 4 HDMI cables would be much easier to hide and organize than 3 or 4 sets of component & composite's.

The really large connector appears to be SCART to me - an absolutely massive analog connection spec that is popular in Europe.

It contains both audio and video, input and output lines in one connector and as far as I remember this includes pins for a component signal. You can buy adapters that convert the SCART pins to the regular RCA jacks we're used to in the US, but I'd assume they would forgo the SCART-connector for a US model and provide the RCA jacks directly.

It looks like the connection between "AUDIO" and "LAN" is a SCART connection which could be used to deliver component. Alternatively the SCART connector could be replaced by 3xRCA Component connection for non-European versions, which is the norm AFAIK.

I can stream divx to my PS3 via Nero MediaHome. I believe you need something that can convert and stream it at the same time (PS3). As for the 360, I am not sure as I have not tried it yet. It would be nice if they allowed you to supply your own codecs so that you could play any type of file you wanted.

If this supports DLNA, that would take the cake.

www.runtime360.com

Real-time file streamer and converter for Xbox 360. You must have MCE 2005 or Vista Home Premium for it to work. It will do a lot more than Divx/Xvid too.

Finally?

Could we finally have a media player that actually plays media files?

If it works as described I for one would be buying this.
