Nintendo has high hopes for the Wii game console

Nintendo of America Senior Vice President of Marketing and Corporate Communication George Harrison boldly predicted sales of more than 35 million Wii consoles in the United States by 2012.  More than 2.5 million Wiis have been sold, putting it in second place behind the Microsoft Xbox 360 game console.

Wii sales surpassed Sony PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 sales over the past four months.  The PlayStation 2 still dominates overall console sales, with more than 38 million sold over seven years.  The PS2 outsold the Xbox 360 and PS3 in the month of April.

In a recently published interview with Bloomberg, Harrison confirmed Nintendo is increasing production at factories in China because of the high demand. "Demand is much greater than we anticipated.  A year ago no one thought we would be in this position," Harrison said.

Analysts have not had the same enthusiasm over estimated Nintendo Wii sales figures.  "The 35 million target is a bit too optimistic for now as it seems the Wii is targeting light gamers, but the U.S. market has a lot of hard-core game players," said Etsuko Tamura, Mizuho Investors Securities Co. analyst.

While the company confirmed that there are no immediate price cuts on the horizon, Nintendo also does not have any plans on upgrading the hardware used in the Wii.  Graphical and hardware inferiority was never an issue for Nintendo, as the console is still able to attract casual gamers.

PS3, Wii, HDTV

I own a PS3 and a Wii and play both on my 52" 1080p television. The PS3 only gets used for PS2 games (inferior to even the Gamecube) and Blu-Ray movies while the Wii gets all the attention. I can't fend people off! Multiple times a week everyone shows up for an impromptu Wii session. NOT ONCE has anyone mention bad graphics or crappy HDTV support. I'm a videophile and even I'll say that 480p is good enough for Wii games and it's as simple as that.

The PS3 is connected with HDMI in 1080p for supported games and the Wii is connected with official Nintendo component cables.

Same exact situation here. The PS3 is for Blu-Ray movies and the Wii for gaming. All on a 100" projection screen. Everyone wants to play the Wii. Right now it seems Wii games are not even at the level of some of the best Gamecube games graphically, but I have no doubt in my mind that future games will exceed Gamecube graphics and if you've seen RE4, then it will be just fine.
