Nintendo has high hopes for the Wii game console

Nintendo of America Senior Vice President of Marketing and Corporate Communication George Harrison boldly predicted sales of more than 35 million Wii consoles in the United States by 2012.  More than 2.5 million Wiis have been sold, putting it in second place behind the Microsoft Xbox 360 game console.

Wii sales surpassed Sony PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 sales over the past four months.  The PlayStation 2 still dominates overall console sales, with more than 38 million sold over seven years.  The PS2 outsold the Xbox 360 and PS3 in the month of April.

In a recently published interview with Bloomberg, Harrison confirmed Nintendo is increasing production at factories in China because of the high demand. "Demand is much greater than we anticipated.  A year ago no one thought we would be in this position," Harrison said.

Analysts have not had the same enthusiasm over estimated Nintendo Wii sales figures.  "The 35 million target is a bit too optimistic for now as it seems the Wii is targeting light gamers, but the U.S. market has a lot of hard-core game players," said Etsuko Tamura, Mizuho Investors Securities Co. analyst.

While the company confirmed that there are no immediate price cuts on the horizon, Nintendo also does not have any plans on upgrading the hardware used in the Wii.  Graphical and hardware inferiority was never an issue for Nintendo, as the console is still able to attract casual gamers.

When they feel it will be a selling point I am sure they can add HDTV. In fact this is one complaint I have consoles are quickly slipping into the PC market they now go online, surf the web and most oddly they upgrade. MS has already added the xbox elite and I think it will not be long before they start upgrading more core components such as faster CPUs and GPUs. This is a way you can get a gamer to buy your console several times. I think soon the whole every console gamer has an equal system will be long gone.

Also recreational players in any sport or game compose the largest user base. The wii has looked past the hype of graphics and said what is good enough for joe blow is good enough to make money. And they have won big on this.

But now I think you will keep seeing more consoles upgrade every year or so.
