Nintendo has high hopes for the Wii game console

Nintendo of America Senior Vice President of Marketing and Corporate Communication George Harrison boldly predicted sales of more than 35 million Wii consoles in the United States by 2012.  More than 2.5 million Wiis have been sold, putting it in second place behind the Microsoft Xbox 360 game console.

Wii sales surpassed Sony PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 sales over the past four months.  The PlayStation 2 still dominates overall console sales, with more than 38 million sold over seven years.  The PS2 outsold the Xbox 360 and PS3 in the month of April.

In a recently published interview with Bloomberg, Harrison confirmed Nintendo is increasing production at factories in China because of the high demand. "Demand is much greater than we anticipated.  A year ago no one thought we would be in this position," Harrison said.

Analysts have not had the same enthusiasm over estimated Nintendo Wii sales figures.  "The 35 million target is a bit too optimistic for now as it seems the Wii is targeting light gamers, but the U.S. market has a lot of hard-core game players," said Etsuko Tamura, Mizuho Investors Securities Co. analyst.

While the company confirmed that there are no immediate price cuts on the horizon, Nintendo also does not have any plans on upgrading the hardware used in the Wii.  Graphical and hardware inferiority was never an issue for Nintendo, as the console is still able to attract casual gamers.

While I think your comparison is a this regard, I do agree with you about the Wii/HD-bashing; from what I've read, most of the people who have purchased Wiis don't even have an HDTV.

Besides, with the way the games are in general, 480p looks pretty decent, and as we've seen with previous consoles, it will take a couple of years before developers will really tax the hardware. (Yes I know it's not that much more powerful than a Gamecube, but I still stand by it.)

Agreed if you only have a small analog TV then you don't need HD. Wii looks good up to about 32" TV but once you go up to the big screens (40+++) it just turns to mush. The games are fun, but moving forward more and more people will have HDTVs. You can't even buy a SD TV any more. In less than 2 years analog will shut off completely. Sorry but in 5 years nobody will want a SD game console no matter how many Mario games it has. In 5 years an analog TV will look as quaint as a VCR or record player.

Alright, first of all, yes, you CAN buy an SDTV, at least if you want a TV under 27 inches. Go to any place that sells TVs, especially Target or Walmart. They have SDTVs, especially the little TV/DVD combo ones, or small LCDs that AREN'T HDTV capable. Second, don't bring in record players to this discussion. A good tube amp system and a good record player is better than your standard CD when it comes to music. Audiophiles spend a lot of money on tube amps and record players, and if you haven't experienced it or understand why, then please be quiet about the subject. Ever wonder why the best guitar amps are tube based? I'm not saying a really, really nice digital receiver/decoder and CD player can't reproduce good audio, but tube systems do it as good or better a lot of the time.

Vinyl sounds 100x better than CDs.

I have things on tape that aren't available on DVD. My VCR is still hooked up.

And stop spreading lies - SDTVs are alive and well and are readily available at any store that sells TVs. In 2009 analog broadcasts shut off. From then on you'll need a digital tuner to pick up stations over the air. But guess what? They don't have to be HD! Digital != High Definition. Every channel on DirecTV is digital.

"So, I think the same thing of the music industry. They can't say that they're losing money, you know what I'm saying. They just probably don't have the same surplus that they had." -- Wu-Tang Clan founder RZA
