Nintendo has high hopes for the Wii game console

Nintendo of America Senior Vice President of Marketing and Corporate Communication George Harrison boldly predicted sales of more than 35 million Wii consoles in the United States by 2012.  More than 2.5 million Wiis have been sold, putting it in second place behind the Microsoft Xbox 360 game console.

Wii sales surpassed Sony PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 sales over the past four months.  The PlayStation 2 still dominates overall console sales, with more than 38 million sold over seven years.  The PS2 outsold the Xbox 360 and PS3 in the month of April.

In a recently published interview with Bloomberg, Harrison confirmed Nintendo is increasing production at factories in China because of the high demand. "Demand is much greater than we anticipated.  A year ago no one thought we would be in this position," Harrison said.

Analysts have not had the same enthusiasm over estimated Nintendo Wii sales figures.  "The 35 million target is a bit too optimistic for now as it seems the Wii is targeting light gamers, but the U.S. market has a lot of hard-core game players," said Etsuko Tamura, Mizuho Investors Securities Co. analyst.

While the company confirmed that there are no immediate price cuts on the horizon, Nintendo also does not have any plans on upgrading the hardware used in the Wii.  Graphical and hardware inferiority was never an issue for Nintendo, as the console is still able to attract casual gamers.

A BIG amen to that! The guy saying that a Wii looks like crap on an HDTV needs to actually try it... the graphics look fine to me. I play my Wii on a 50" HDTV, along with about a dozen other systems, including my Atari (because an Atari doesn't belong in a closet, it belongs on it's own shelf on your entertainment system!) =p.

I suggest that if:
A.) you're a Sony fanboy; hook up you're PS1 and play a Resident Evil game, or a Final Fantasy, or a Madden, or whatever else floats your boat or
B.) if you're a Microsoft fanboy; hook up your laptop (like I do) and play Doom, or Rise of the Triad, or Duke Nuke'em 3D (I know, they weren't made by Microsoft, but I have to pick on them too since they were Windows games, even if it is far-fetched!).

Do this and tell me you didn't have a blast playing them, and that the graphical inferiority was too much to handle. If graphics are the ONLY thing that can give you that "fix", then sadly, you will be missing out on a whole lot of great games.

All I want to know is...if this console is technologically inferior to the original Xbox, why the hell is it over twice the price of the original Xbox?

You can't tell me that after selling 7 million consoles at $250, that they didn't already make back their money for R&D costs.

Because Nintendo HAS to make a profit with each console sold. Unlike Sony and MS they do NOT have other divisions. Gaming is their sole income, so if they take a loss on the console they lose money and dont have a wildy popular line of tv's or operating systems to keep them in business.

And the original XBox does not have a WiiMote and games that support such a controller. Makes a big difference, no matter how similar or inferior it is on the inside compared to the Xbox.

I really dont get why people make such a HUGE deal out of the Wii-mote. Its not THAT new or revolutionary. If the technology actually WAS that impressive than people would be jumping all over the ps3 for it.

IMHO people just were looking for an excuse to love their Nintendo, and this was their outlet.

Because it works and it plays great. You wouldn't be saying such nonsense if you actually tried it. This is coming from a guy who hasn't played anything Nintendo since the SNES.
