Nintendo has high hopes for the Wii game console

Nintendo of America Senior Vice President of Marketing and Corporate Communication George Harrison boldly predicted sales of more than 35 million Wii consoles in the United States by 2012.  More than 2.5 million Wiis have been sold, putting it in second place behind the Microsoft Xbox 360 game console.

Wii sales surpassed Sony PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 sales over the past four months.  The PlayStation 2 still dominates overall console sales, with more than 38 million sold over seven years.  The PS2 outsold the Xbox 360 and PS3 in the month of April.

In a recently published interview with Bloomberg, Harrison confirmed Nintendo is increasing production at factories in China because of the high demand. "Demand is much greater than we anticipated.  A year ago no one thought we would be in this position," Harrison said.

Analysts have not had the same enthusiasm over estimated Nintendo Wii sales figures.  "The 35 million target is a bit too optimistic for now as it seems the Wii is targeting light gamers, but the U.S. market has a lot of hard-core game players," said Etsuko Tamura, Mizuho Investors Securities Co. analyst.

While the company confirmed that there are no immediate price cuts on the horizon, Nintendo also does not have any plans on upgrading the hardware used in the Wii.  Graphical and hardware inferiority was never an issue for Nintendo, as the console is still able to attract casual gamers.

Maybe on the Wii2?

Probably the Wii3. Or as it will be so aptly named, the Twii .

Wouldn't the Wii2 be called "TWii" and the Wii3 be called "ThWii"? :P Just a silly thought!

And building off my first silly thought, I think they also could have started a nomenclature based on the number of "i's" and other roman numerals i.e. Wi (ver 1), Wii (ver 2), Wiii (ver 3) and then with ver 4 it would be Wiv...they could market it towards wives of gamers :P.

(Don't mind my ramblings, its been a long and busy day at work and I needed to just lose my head in some sillyness) :P

What does analog being cancelled in 2009 have to do with the Wii not supporting HD?

Last I checked, most SDTVs have composite and/or component video connections. Hell, my SDTV right now has three devices connected to it, none of which are using the analog connection.

Besides, how many college students and young adults do you know that can afford an HDTV without their parents buying it for them? I sure know a hell of alot more who can't than can.

Agreed with drebo. Analog shutoff in 2009 is only relevant to OTA (over the air) signals, not video/sound interfaces.

Huh? I see analog TVs for sale everywhere. Even after the OTA shutoff, people will still own analog TVs unless HDTVs come down to under $100.

They could call the Wii 2 the "TWoo" then?

The second one should be Twii, and the third Thrii.
