Nintendo has high hopes for the Wii game console

Nintendo of America Senior Vice President of Marketing and Corporate Communication George Harrison boldly predicted sales of more than 35 million Wii consoles in the United States by 2012.  More than 2.5 million Wiis have been sold, putting it in second place behind the Microsoft Xbox 360 game console.

Wii sales surpassed Sony PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 sales over the past four months.  The PlayStation 2 still dominates overall console sales, with more than 38 million sold over seven years.  The PS2 outsold the Xbox 360 and PS3 in the month of April.

In a recently published interview with Bloomberg, Harrison confirmed Nintendo is increasing production at factories in China because of the high demand. "Demand is much greater than we anticipated.  A year ago no one thought we would be in this position," Harrison said.

Analysts have not had the same enthusiasm over estimated Nintendo Wii sales figures.  "The 35 million target is a bit too optimistic for now as it seems the Wii is targeting light gamers, but the U.S. market has a lot of hard-core game players," said Etsuko Tamura, Mizuho Investors Securities Co. analyst.

While the company confirmed that there are no immediate price cuts on the horizon, Nintendo also does not have any plans on upgrading the hardware used in the Wii.  Graphical and hardware inferiority was never an issue for Nintendo, as the console is still able to attract casual gamers.

This just in: Maker of product_A vaguely predicts that product_A will sell well.

Now, here's Tom with the weather...

This is a guess. Plain and simple. And a biased guess at that.

I like Wii, don't get me wrong (it's the only "next gen" console I have), but this is silly. Watch, I can do it too. "I predict that Wii will sell 21 million units by 2010." Wow, that was easy.

Well, I think there's some meaning to this as they will probably base their production capacity on this forecast, which I can only hope is based on a sensible model of growth. Also, as Nintendo company is a publicly owned corporation, it may have some meaning to investors.

Nintendo has been pretty spot-on with their forcasts for the Wii and DS though.

They forcast 6 Million Wii's by the end of the Fiscal year and they reached it.

Actually they havent been spot on with the Wii. They grossly underestimated it's appeal. They might even potentially double what they initially predicted of what it would sale in its first year.

I agree with aftlizard01. Even Nintendo doubted their success at first. But I think they have looked at the market in depth to make a statement like this. Nintendo isn't one to over state their figures (normally). Thus I’m actually of the view that based on whatever market analysis they have done, the 35 million that they are reporting is actually an understatement. 35 million sounds ambitious to me but, but it does not sound unrealistic.

Now that the once doubtful 3rd parties have seen that Nintendo’s console can sell, they are scrambling to bring games to the console. It’s evident with buzz about Wii only game studios being formed large 3PPs. It therefore means that the dearth of games that the console is experiencing now will become a welcomed surplus in months to come.

In addition and allow me to generalise, we (the people who frequent sites like Dailytech and Joystiq) are in the minority. We tend to have a view that technical superiority should translate into sales. In some cases it has but in many other cases it has not: Atari Linx, Neo Geo, Sega Saturn and (I dare say) the PS3.

correction: formed by large 3PPs.

Well, 6 million was the upper limit of their production capacity and the demand for the Wii is greater than what they were able to supply to the market. So predicting they would sell knowing how much they could produce isn't difficult.

Forecasting they will sell 35 million down the road, its doubtful but they will come close.

Surprise surprise, this time around Nintendo is proving to be the "winner". Odd thing is, there doesn't look to be a real loser, dispite the PS3's misguidance its winning the blueray format war for Sony.
