Nintendo has high hopes for the Wii game console

Nintendo of America Senior Vice President of Marketing and Corporate Communication George Harrison boldly predicted sales of more than 35 million Wii consoles in the United States by 2012.  More than 2.5 million Wiis have been sold, putting it in second place behind the Microsoft Xbox 360 game console.

Wii sales surpassed Sony PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 sales over the past four months.  The PlayStation 2 still dominates overall console sales, with more than 38 million sold over seven years.  The PS2 outsold the Xbox 360 and PS3 in the month of April.

In a recently published interview with Bloomberg, Harrison confirmed Nintendo is increasing production at factories in China because of the high demand. "Demand is much greater than we anticipated.  A year ago no one thought we would be in this position," Harrison said.

Analysts have not had the same enthusiasm over estimated Nintendo Wii sales figures.  "The 35 million target is a bit too optimistic for now as it seems the Wii is targeting light gamers, but the U.S. market has a lot of hard-core game players," said Etsuko Tamura, Mizuho Investors Securities Co. analyst.

While the company confirmed that there are no immediate price cuts on the horizon, Nintendo also does not have any plans on upgrading the hardware used in the Wii.  Graphical and hardware inferiority was never an issue for Nintendo, as the console is still able to attract casual gamers.

I still think hardcore gamers are going to want to add one to their stable of game machines. Anybody out there in the US knows these things are still like gold, so any leet gamers out there wouldn't be caught dead without one... the rejection of not being "the most leet on the street" might be too much.

I bought a Wii. It's been great so far. Here's to hoping that some more games come out for it though. :/

Kinda strange, but I consider myself a "leet" or 1337 gamer and I wouldnt be caught dead WITH one.

I personally find nothing enjoyable, or fun about it. I dont like the games, I dont like the graphics. i'll stick to my 360 for Live and my PC for all my real game addictions. When the PS3 gets some good exclusives i'll probably get one. But no matter how many Mario's, Metroids, or Donkey Kongs it gets I will NOT buy a Wii.

You obviously haven't played one for an extended period of time. Wii Sports still gets lots of playtime from me, over 4 months after I bought it. That is the true test of a good game.

I guess thats true, Ive only logged about 8 hours with the system over 2 sessions having tried out a myriad of wii sports, LoZ: TP, Excite Truck, Red Steel, and that raving rabbits game.

So no ive not logged an immense ammount of time with the system, but I feel that after sampling the launch titles for more than 8 hours I should feel SOME compulsion toward wanting or buying the system myself if it truly was that great.

Im not saying the system is horrible, just that its overpriced, the graphics look like trash, and I personally find nothing to enjoy in the current line up.
