"Stranglehold" collector's edition to present "Hard Boiled" in full 1080p glory

Sony has long preached about the gaming benefits that the Blu-ray Disc drive is affording to the PlayStation 3. While we may not yet be seeing the direct advantages of the extra 40-plus gigabytes in gameplay, John Woo’s Stranglehold game offers PS3 owners an exclusive not found on the DVD version for Xbox 360 and PC.

In addition to the game, a collector’s edition of Stranglehold on PlayStation 3 will include a full-length, 1080p version of John Woo's critically acclaimed action film Hard Boiled on the same Blu-ray Disc. Stranglehold collector’s edition will retail for $69.95, $10 more than the regular edition, and marks the first movie and game hybrid disc for the Blu-ray format.

“The exclusive collector's edition of Stranglehold demonstrates the power of PlayStation 3 Blu-ray disc and the total entertainment experience that can only be found on PlayStation 3,” said Riley Russell, senior vice president Third Party Relations and general counsel, SCEA. “The 50GB capacity of Blu-ray disc allows PS3 content publishers to do things simply not possible on our competitor's 9GB DVD-based systems. Thanks to the advanced technology found in PS3, developers like Midway can truly realize their visions, bringing consumers even closer to the game.”

“We are very excited to be offering PS3 owners this exclusive collector's edition of Stranglehold, complete with John Woo's classic film 'Hard Boiled',” said Steve Allison, chief marketing officer, Midway. “Thanks to SCEA, the Blu-ray Disc Association and The Weinstein Company, fans will now be able to fully experience the world of John Woo in one complete and special package.”

Interestingly enough, the Weinstein Company, the company who owns the rights to Hard Boiled in North America, is an exclusive HD DVD supporter. Stranglehold may be the only place that Hard Boiled will touch in the world of Blu-ray Disc, as the standalone movie-only version of the John Woo classic will logically be an HD DVD exclusive.

"....allows PS3 content publishers to do things simply not possible on our competitor's 9GB DVD-based systems"

He somehow forgot to mention the other competitor's 30 GB capacity.

... which should now be taken away, because he's wrong: the 360 only has games on DVD format, NOT HD-DVD

Here is what he was saying:

1. The 360 has a 9GB capacity, not HD-DVD. The 360 is the "competitor".
2. You will not find a HD-DVD with a 360 game on the same disc.

Not sure how it can be interpreted any other way. I will not say never to #2, but from the sounds of MS, I'm fairly certain that is a "ever" statement unless they come out with a 4th console that has HD-DVD built in.

It's kinda funny how folks get voted up for not reading the article.

I'd say it was obvious that they're talking about the 360 because the article itself is talking about a game.

"The 50GB capacity of Blu-ray disc allows PS3 content publishers to do things simply not possible on our competitor's 9GB DVD"

It sounds to me that he's implying that it's impossible for a 360 user to have a movie and game on the same disc because of size restrictions. It certainly is possible to put a game and a movie on a 9GB DVD, not to mention those 360 users that the HD DVD add-on. I just thought that the statement was bold and not completely truthful.

It's possible, if the game is Pong.

The statement is bold, and it's entirely true. If you want to play a game on a PS3 you have access per disk of 50 gigs of information.

If you want to play the game on 360 {with DVD9} you have only 9 gigs of info that you can put on the disk.

That's exactly what he was saying, without having to get up, plug the add-on into your system, put the disk in, wait 10 minutes while it boots up, and THEN watch the movie. With the PS3 it's all right there, you'll be able to watch the movie and when you're done play the game.

Plus, not every 360 owner has a HD-DVD add-on, so there should be no debate there. That and most people seem to realize that while they're bringing up {endlessly} that the PS3 is SOOOooooo expensive a 360 with the HD-DVD add-on alone pushes the price to pretty much the exact same as the PS3 {and that's not the 360 elite either}

I've heard they're pretty fun, if you're 5.

Otherwise everything else I've heard about them makes them look like trash.

Could easily be done with a Hybrid disc. You know, DVD on one side, HDDVD on the other...

and some people are saying that the cost of THIS game is expensive, can you imagine the cost of a 360 game {which at least would be about 60 bucks} AND an HD-DVD movie on the other side?

Considering that regular DVD on one side and HD on the other pushes the price of it up PAST what Blu-Ray would cost, I'd be surprised if the cost were anything less than 90 bucks.

But it would push the HD-DVD add on, that's for sure.

I'd rate you down but woudn't have effect.
You should read the article until you realize that they are talking about game + hd movie.
Than simply isn't possible on the Xbox360, even with the HDDVD addon.

What is so special about having a movie and a game on the same physical media? If a publisher wants to do the same thing for the X360, it could just bundle the HD-DVD disc and the game in the same box. Having to put the second disc in the second drive is too much of a physical exertion? Most people, I suspect, would prefer to have a separate disc that they could lend to a friend.

Do you still think it's impossible? Hint, You would have to switch the disk between drives.

Better be a good movie AND good game for $70! It's not like this is Halo 3 or anything!

The movie isn't bad... I like it a lot, but it's typical HK blood opera stuff -- guns rarely run out of ammo, an mp5 can mow down 100 people, etc. Very stylish, though. The archetypical HK action movie that had a lot of influence on Hollywood action.

However... I own the DVD version of the movie, and the sound mastery is awful compared to most modern films... and the video isn't that great either. I really wonder what the point of moving to a higher def media is unless they remaster it...

Yeah it's great that you can fit a game and a movie on one media, but what does that have to do with the power of the system?
This while being good news about the future media posibilities, shows just once more that a game does not come close to fill a HD-DVD or BD media, and proves nothing on the power of the PS3. We knew already that it can play games and can play HD video.

Anyways I hope that releases like that in the future will come closer to home in price.

Its a multiplatform game. Why would it take up more than a DVD9? They aren't going to gimp the 360 version and at this point why would they add more game content to the PS3 version.

A few future and current games are said to take up more than a DVD9 on the PS3. MGS4, R:FOM, Unchartered:Drakes Fortune are all said to take up 15+ Gigs. More and more PC games are reaching the limits of DVD9. Even something as stupid as Sims 2 with all of its expansions would take up more than a DVD9. I don't understand why its so hard to believe that games will take up more space. I guess people are still happy with 640k memory too.

By Timeless on 5/22/2007 2:10:34 PM , Rating: 2
The article never had anything to do with the power of the PS3. This article was about how you can fit a game and HD movie on to one BD disk, even though we all know it could be done. The power of the PS3 is totally irrelevant to the post.

But I do agree that the price for the game and movie is WAY too high. Joo Woo is good, but a game/movie shouldn't cost $70.

By psychobriggsy on 5/22/2007 12:27:27 PM , Rating: 2
But if it is the dubbed english version then it's not worth it at all. Worst dubbing ever - both for lipsync, and for actor selection - is a Chinese person on a Hong Kong street going to have a London Cockney accent? No. So why does the english language version have that?

Still the man is right that the PS3 can, on a single disc, also include a full 1080p movie on the game disc, whereas the 360 clearly cannot fit a 1080p movie on a DVD along with the game - probably not even on a separate DVD of its own. Most 360 owners don't have the HD-DVD peripheral, so bundling that with the game wouldn't be as appealing.

By Teletran1 on 5/22/2007 3:11:53 PM , Rating: 2
supposedly it has the original audio trackand the dub. sorry couldn't find a link.

Yes, it's a good movie. It's actually one of my favourite John Woo films -- in my top 3 for that director. I think it's reasonable to say that this movie is kind of the spiritual predecessor for Infernal Affairs, the movie that "The Departed" is derived from. If you haven't seen IA, it's one of the best films from HK cinema in the last half decade.

If you want more info, just say so. :)

$70? Uh, no thanks.

I'd pay $20 for the movie on hi-def. I'm not interested in the game at all.

By OxBow on 5/22/2007 9:47:32 AM , Rating: 2
Typically, games based on movies are bad to terrible (let alone the quality of the movie itself). However, if the game is an average game, bundling it onto the same disk as the movie makes sense. The game is multiplatform, which means the libraries will be basically the same size (roughly) across the systems. The publisher has all that extra space, they can either add more content, textures, etc. or add multiple copies of the same files for faster access/error correction, or they can add something else. Providing a movie to fill that space makes what would be a mid-grade title into a higher grade value. Still not for everyone (I'm not that interested anyway) but still a better option.

If you're standing in the store and looking at what version to buy (360, PS or Wii?) this extra content might be all that's needed to tip the purchase Sony's way.

OH NO!!!
