Hardware HDMI to Replace DVI by 2008 in the CE Market

DVI is expected to be wiped completely off the map by 2008 in the Consumer Electronics market

HDMI enabled devices are set to surpass DVI in the consumer electronics market by the year 2008 according to market research by In-Stat. HDMI shipments were 4 million in 2004 and reached 17.4 million units in 2005. DVI shipments in the CE space are projected to reach 66 million units in 2006 before being phased out completely and replaced HDMI in 2008.

An analyst for In-Stat explains: "There are two reasons for the projected DVI decline: One is that the recently released HDMI 1.2 specification makes the standard more compatible with PCs. The second is two new specifications announced in 2005, DisplayPort and Unified Display Interface (UDI), which offer higher bandwidth and simpler design than DVI."

While HDMI is expected to have smooth sailing in the consumer electronics market, it appears that DVI will live on in the PC market for at least a few more years.

nothing to worry about

It doesn't matter if you have DVI now. As someone else pointed out, DVI can easily be converted to HDMI with no loss in quality. HDMI is essentially the same thing as DVI, except it carries sound as well.

The only real benefit to HDMI is that you can have video and audio in one cable going to a TV. But many people have their audio going to a separate A/V receiver, so they'll end up splitting HDMI into two separate video and audio cables anyway.

I keep hearing that argument about people with A/V receivers needing to split up Audio and Video, but it doesn't make much sense to me. I have certainly always used my A/V amp as the "switch" for input sources in my setups.

To me, your argument is the equivalent of saying that a single cable for Keyboard/Video/Mouse would be useful to normal computer users, but useless to the ones using KVM switches.

All I'm trying to say is that it would be preferable to keep the video going straight to the TV and divert the sound to a receiver, if the user has one.

If the source is HDMI, a splitter and separate cables would be necessary. Some receivers may have HDMI ports, but passing the video through them may cause a drop in quality.

I don't think they will drop S/PDIF on sources with HDMI just yet, so I assume you would just use both cables without needing a splitter to get S/PDIF.

As for drop in quality, it seems that having the video in digital form finally eliminates the convenience/quality trade-off that could have been a problem with analogue video.

So go ahead and ignore those who already bought high dollar displays with DVI and expect them to do the same in 2 years.

Or... the fact alot of people still use VGA on thier systems or even run into the 1600x1200 DVI screen limit yet on thier cheapo LCD's.

It doesn't really mater just as long as you have HDCP compatible DVI. DVI is easily converted to HDMI with no loss of video quaility. HDMI is pretty much the same as DVI but it also carries sound thats why you won't see them replaced on the pc any time soon.

this is true, i recently built a home theater system for someone, using a high defination projector (mounted on ceiling). we had the computer, reciever, and all devices in a back room. the reciever accepts only hdmi (no dvi) we used dvi/hdmi converter from computer into the reciever, and hdmi/dvi converter from reciever to projector (only had dvi). all works flawlessly. i also used the cat5 to usb coverters to put usb in the theater room, then multiply the usb terminals with a powered usb hub. the bluetooth eye for keyboard and mouse is in there, so is the usb RF reciver for ati's wonder remote (bought the ati550 home theater elite wonder thingy for analog tv).

the owner can now have anythign one click away (dvd stored on harddrive, tv, radio, internet, games), on a beautiful 148" 1280x720 screen.

I'm not 100% sure, but I remember seeing a post in the daily news section about a new standard that was supposed to replace HDMI in a few years. Anyone remember what it was called? Maybe it was about HDMI replacing DVI, but I don't think it was.

I love being broke. It seems that I can skip DVI altogether now. My 17" Crt will last until 2008 or 2009.
