Lara Croft is named by Guinness as the "Most Successful Human Videogame Heroine."
Guinness to track video game world records

Guinness World Records already compiles many of the world’s most bizarre and amazing feats from mankind, but oddly enough, gaming achievements are currently a little lacking from the latest book of world records. That will soon change, however, as Guinness World Records will announce at the London Book Fair that it is working on a book dedicated to video game records.

"We reintroduced videogaming world records to our annual book a few years ago, and it’s proved to be one of the most popular sections with our core readers. It makes sense, therefore, to dedicate an entire annual to the subject," said Guinness World Records editor in chief Craig Glenday.

The book will include reviews of the 20 biggest games of the year, plus record game scores, hardware profiles, sales figures, technical achievements and professional gamer salaries, according to

"Our record researchers are already scouring the videogaming community for superlatives, and the vast number of games, gamers, developers and platforms mean that we have an incredible pool of content to dip into each year. It's going to be a very exciting project," added Glenday.

Guinness World Records: Videogame Edition 2008 is expected to release in April 2008.

I think the most successful pc game in the last 10 years should be nominated Half Life

Actually I would think the vote would go to World of Warcraft.

However the most susccesful video game franchise may go to the Unreal or Battlefield series, HL2 only had two (HL1/HL2) iterations as well as 6 expansions total (Black Mesa, Episode 1, etc.).

They would have to update the book every year as Wow is still growing. I just joined last night after putting it off because of my addiction to Ultima Online.

you could also put Solid Snake from Metal Gear Solid or Sam Fisher from Splinter Cell you could also put Hitman 47 and the zelda character or Mario from Nintendo not to mention Duke Nukem or Sonic the Hedgehog...

You're confusing "most successful" with your favorite game. I played and greatly enjoyed half-life and have never played WoW, but WoW will probably be the most successful game of all time (if not already) and certainly the most successful in the last 10 years.

If by "most successful" you mean copies sold then I think the Sims franchise would win

Meh - I never understood HL1's mass-appeal. The mods that came afterward, sure, but I found the SP/DM pretty average. HL2 on the other hand impressed me a lot more.
