Santa Rosa may support 802.11n, WiMAX

A little over a year from now, we should see another update to Intel's mobile processor platform. Santa Rosa is due to launch in March of 2007 instead of late 2006 as originally planned.

Intel and Taiwan notebook makers had originally targeted to roll out Santa Rosa-based notebook by the end of 2006, but have recently re-scheduled the launch date to March 2007, the sources noted, adding that the new schedule allows Taiwan makers more time to develop notebooks based on the new platform, while extending sales cycle for the recently launched Napa-based notebooks.

The new chipset will have support for 64-bit enabled dual-core Merom processors and is expected to be bundled with an updated version of the Golan wireless chipset. With the recent ratification of the 802.11n wireless draft standard, it's possible that Intel would add support for the dual-band 2.4GHz/5.8GHz protocol in Golan 2.

With the release of Santa Rosa, notebook shipments are expected to top 100 million units globally in 2007.

At first glance I thought there this chip was going to be dual core 2.4/5.8 ghz. I was like daaaaamn that's a nice jump.

On a side note... does anything ever have an initial launch date and keep it?

What's interesting is this appears to based upon the notebook manufacturers asking more for more time to develop systems, and not a delay by Intel.

Depends. I've also seen articles stating that Intel is delaying the launch so they can sell more Napa platforms.

Traditionally, every Centrino platform launches a year apart.
