Version 1.2 of Apple's identity-crisis software now supports the 32-bit versions of Microsoft's latest OS

Owners of Intel-based Macs can now join their PC brethern in rejoicing - or demeaning - Microsoft's latest Windows operating system, Vista. With the release of Boot Camp beta 1.2, Apple has added support for the 32-bit versions of Vista.

While some enterprising souls have managed to install Vista release candidates on their Intel-based Macs prior to this point, Vista's installer and EFI-aware boot code caused its share of problems, and drivers were not fully functional. Boot Camp 1.2 fixes these installation bugs, and adds a nearly full compliment of drivers. Audio, video, input and communication devices are all supported, but the Sudden Motion Sensor, Ambient Light Sensor, and S-Video functionality are still absent, so SmackBook fans will have to restrict their technology abuse to OSX.

In addition to the 32-bit restriction, upgrades or multi-disc versions of Vista are not supported. There have been some spotty reports of success with an installation of Windows XP followed by an in-place upgrade to Vista, but Apple makes no mention of this on their websites.

Boot Camp 1.2 is a 138MB download, and is freely available to any Mac owner running OS 10.4.6 or later with 10GB of free drive space, a supported Windows XP or Vista install media, and a desire to make hardcore Apple zealots squirm a little when they see a Start button on their LCD.

it's not Hypocritical at all. Apple is a business, and it is run by people who do have, believe it or not, a firm grasp on how the commercial market works. Apple believes that they have the superior Operating System when compared to Vista. Compared to their Cousin Linux... well, depends on which Distro you use for an example.

The point though is that Apple knows that in order for the Notebooksm or Desktops to sell, they have to be desirable to the business user with a decent expense account. Apple also realizes that not all Software runs atop their OSX. From that point, it's just basic economics at work. Apple needs to have the widest market possible for their notebooks. When a single program could make or break an Apple Hardware contract, Apple needs to be able to fulfill the program requirements. Apple can do this by allowing Microsoft Windows to also operate on their system.

Yes, it does help enforce the perceived Microsoft Monopoly. Weight is given to the concept that Microsoft's products have some sort of inherent value or use.

Another problem, and one I don't think you or the people who voted for your post considered, is piracy or out of warranty systems. People are going to experiment, period, with their computers. Some people out there will look at the Intel Processor and say, "I can run NT4, NT5, NT6, or a *nix kernel on that." And they will try.

Basically it's the idea of "I can't stop you, but I can take as much risk away as possible". For example, lets say you were into File Sharing. I can't stop you from using a Peer to Peer network... But I can tell you that Gnucleus doesn't have Spyware... but Limewire does.

Apple is a similar position. On one hand, if they don't provide the tools and code needed to get NT5 and NT6 (or *nix, or whatever) running on their laptops... somebody else will try.

Is it hypocritical? Not by a long shot. Is it smart business? Yes. Am I personally happy with it? No.

I really think that Apple's point is that you can buy their hardware, and not worry about losing your ability to run certain programs. As I said earlier, if a Mac didn't have the ability to run Windows so I can use AutoCAD, than it wouldn't even be an option for me at all. Apple has now opened me up to their latops (which I love, though I cant quite afford one yet) where I would never have been able to feasible use one machine for everything. I for one am very excited that Apple has provided a free and SUPPORTED way of running any software I may need.

But that's where I believe Apple fails. If you're saving your pennies for a notebook, you're going to be able to afford a PC before you're able to afford a Mac. Their prices, especially their notebook prices, are ridiculous. I could walk into Staples right now and buy a PC notebook twice as powerful as the one I currently own for $700. (I just mention Staples because I was looking at laptops their the other day.) I know for a fact that a Mac notebook with the same specs is a lot more than that.

Mac hardware is over priced and and inferior compared to PC hardware at the same price point.

And you've got a choice as to whether or not you want to buy it. Although, where could you possibly buy a laptop that's as cleanly built as a Mac? Of course, you also have the option as to whether you want to buy some cheaply-built POS... (talking about laptops, not custom-built towers)

The only issue with a Mac nowadays is that the configurations are so limited; gamers might want to look elsewhere.

wow you get voted down to pointing out MAC uses inferior hardware that is "optimized" for a mac? Those video cards for MAC were double the size of their PC equivalent = worth your money?
There is no real reason to buy a mac anymore hence the release of BOOTCAMP. Isnt MAC OS not superior to windows? IT NEVER WAS!
Apple realy has no idea what to do and how to compete with Microsoft after the release of vista... bootcamp is their last hope.

tekzor, I voted you up but you're still wrong about prices. get any decent brand PC with exactly the same specs/size/weight/built-in devices as in Mac Mini/iMac/MacBook - and it will likely cost more than comparable Mac. for example Aopen Mac Mini clones used to cost more than comparable Mac Mini, and Sony's iMac clones still cost same or more than comparable iMac, same for Dell iMac clone (okay, _almost_ a clone, not as much as Sony's one) named M2010 I think. Same for Mac Pro. Macs stopped being overpriced the moment they went Intel way. just go to HP or Dell or Lenovo websites, configure yourself a laptop or desktop with same specs/size/weight as comparable Mac and see for yourself. I won't buy a Mac anyway, they are for pussies, and I'm a gamer, not a pussie :) but even though I'm a gamer who loves newegg the most, I still did my research and found out Macs are not overpriced anymore. you can find the same if you try to open your eyes. less zealotry and you dicover new exciting things... or not exciting, it depends :)

The Dell M2010 is in no way an iMac clone -- It is a massive 20 inch desktop replacement notebook for executives. Whether it is practical, and whether there is any market for such a beast is debatable, but in no way it in supposed to compete with Apple's low-end iMac machines.

yeah, I agree, M2010 is not supposed to compete with Apple's low-end iMacs. it's rather competing with high-end 24" iMac.

I can agree on some of the prices but due to apple being the only producer of their macs, there is no price legroom. Contraints to buying a computer kinda sucks.

good point, but you should understand that Apple is a minority/niche computer maker, they have only about 6% of PC market share in the US right now (numbers from wikipedia). being such a small scale PC maker they can't yet afford cheap mass market $300 PCs eMachines style or Dell style. small boutique PC makers like Alienware also charge arm and leg for their stylish luxury PCs, and you don't seem to complain, then why do you complain about just another boutique PC maker named Apple Inc? you should swear at Voodoo PC, FNW, and everyone else, by the same logic, now shoudn't you?

And that notebook would be large, thick, and fugly as hell. Apple's style choices cost money. Those who appreciate it pay more, and don't think twice about it.

Similar to a hooker and an escort. Hookers can give you more bang for your buck but the escort has class and style.

Thank you for pointing out that apple "style" is only a fad that works for "sophisticated" people that chose style over better performance.

lolz, point out one useful thing that mac's can do that my pc can't do (dual booting OS x-whatever and windows doesn't count). And one thing it can do cheaper and then we'll talk. And ya, styleish, I really care about how my pc looks when it sits under my desk.......
