Seagate joins Fujitsu in offering a 160GB 7200RPM SATA 3.0Gbp/s notebook drive

Fujitsu may have kicked off the 160GB 7200RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s notebook hard drive wars with its MHW2160BJ, but Seagate is fighting back with an offering of its own. Seagate’s new 160GB Momentus 7200.2 is a second generation 7200RPM hard drive which uses perpendicular recording technology.

"The growing number of computer users turning to laptops as their primary PCs want every inch of capacity, performance and durability they enjoy in their desktop systems," said Seagate vice president and general manager Michael Wingert. "The new Momentus 7200.2 hard drive epitomizes Seagate's focus on delivering cutting-edge storage technologies that make it easier to move, use and protect digital information in the home, in the office and on-the-go."

The Momentus 7200.2 also adds a free-fall sensor to the options sheet with its second generation 7200RPM notebook drives. The sensor can detect a free-fall from a height of just 8 inches. The drives are also built to withstand non-operating shocks of 900 Gs and operating shocks of 350 Gs.

The Momentus 7200.2 series is available now in capacities of 80GB, 100GB, 120GB and 160GB. According to Seagate, the Momentus 7200.2 160GB with G-Force protection will have a street price of around $188.
