A study by Nielsen shows that game console popularity in the U.S. continues to rise
A new report released by Nielsen
claims that video game consoles are now in 41% of U.S. homes
, an 18.5% increase from the fourth quarter of 2004. In a report called “The State of the Console,” conducted by the recently launched Nielsen Wireless and Interactive Services division, the division spearheaded a study from the fourth quarter of 2004 until the fourth quarter of 2006, attempting to study trends in console ownership in the U.S.
The study found that almost 46 million homes had consoles in them by the last quarter of 2006, allowing around 150 million people the opportunity to play a console system when they pleased. At any moment during the day, 1.6 million people can be found using a video game console system. Furthermore, console owners also spend an average of 2 hours and 15 minutes per day gaming.
Not surprisingly, two-thirds of men who are between 18 and 34 years of age in television households also have access to game consoles.
Console gamers are also increasingly using the Internet while gaming, with more than 4.4 million households connecting to the Internet.
This report was the first in a series of studies that Nielsen has been working on. Game publishers and advertisers will likely use the data gathered by Nielsen to try to accurately implement dynamic in-game ads to help raise revenue.

Welcome! in response to your post, would you not say that your choice in friends might be influenced by what you have in common? And wouldn't an affinity for computer entertainment be one of those? I suspect that if you poll a random citizen that happens to not have a console in his home he'd claim that neither do most of the people he knows.
In any case this makes me wonder what demographic the majority of polled households might fall under and if that would have any impact on this study.

I have considered that SOME of my friends are gadget nuts, however, that's only about 50% of them, at best, the other half is made up of what I would consider more "average" people who know very litle about computers (I can testify to that, as I usually get called by them to clean up their PCs ;)
Most of them have older consoles, such as the PS2 and Xbox.
In general, they have kids, who also play on the consoles.
They have chosen consoles as they can't mess them up like they do with PCs.
None of the people I know would be considered "early adopters" of PCs or consoles (I still use a gamecube, which IMO is still more than enough for gaming ATM, I may well buy a Wii towards the end of this year).
