A study by Nielsen shows that game console popularity in the U.S. continues to rise
A new report released by Nielsen
claims that video game consoles are now in 41% of U.S. homes
, an 18.5% increase from the fourth quarter of 2004. In a report called “The State of the Console,” conducted by the recently launched Nielsen Wireless and Interactive Services division, the division spearheaded a study from the fourth quarter of 2004 until the fourth quarter of 2006, attempting to study trends in console ownership in the U.S.
The study found that almost 46 million homes had consoles in them by the last quarter of 2006, allowing around 150 million people the opportunity to play a console system when they pleased. At any moment during the day, 1.6 million people can be found using a video game console system. Furthermore, console owners also spend an average of 2 hours and 15 minutes per day gaming.
Not surprisingly, two-thirds of men who are between 18 and 34 years of age in television households also have access to game consoles.
Console gamers are also increasingly using the Internet while gaming, with more than 4.4 million households connecting to the Internet.
This report was the first in a series of studies that Nielsen has been working on. Game publishers and advertisers will likely use the data gathered by Nielsen to try to accurately implement dynamic in-game ads to help raise revenue.

My wife-to-be not only plays World of Warcraft, The Longest Journey, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Grand Theft Auto, and much more, she's actually quite good at them. Lately, WoW has been all-consuming, but she enjoys it and we play together more often than not. Call it a "date" if you want, but whatever you call it, I consider it quality time we can spend together.
And, for the record, I think she's quite the hottie.
I certainly see your point, though. The ever-elusive female gamer is a rare catch indeed.

Ironically, my girlfriend is a heavy gamer from as far back as the SNES days. It was refreshing during Christmas time where one of the dorkiest yet romantic things to do was cuddle up and play Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney together on the DS. It didn't take her long to break down and get a DS Lite of her own and if anything, has only enhanced the dynamic of spending quality time together (i.e. Playing Children of Mana, etc.).
Otherwise, those mythical creatures do exist. Another female gamer exists within my apartment and games regularly on her DS, PS2 and computer. Oftentimes, we hear her playing Halo into the night, reveling in how she head-shot her mom or pa.
Ah, what an age we live in.
