Verizon customers don't ever have to worry about missing the big game

V CAST from Verizon Wireless already offers news and music videos, but now the service will also include sports news, scores, and videos.  Verizon and ESPN announced on Thursday their agreement to put Mobile ESPN content on Verizon's V CAST phones.

With a multiyear agreement, both companies are set to launch the service in the coming months.  The service will be offered for free for V CAST customers, who are already paying a fee of $15 per month.

Executive Vice President of ESPN Enterprises, Salil Mehta, commented on the partnership and the impact of the agreement. "ESPN has built the best wireless sports application of its kind and we are extremely pleased to offer our unique content and unmatched innovation through the nation's leading wireless carrier and data provider...for ESPN, this is the right strategy and the right carrier relationship to grow our business while serving millions of sports fans with the information they want, when and how they want it."

The new service will include features such as real-time sports news, scores and alerts, select ESPN insider content, videos, ESPN fantasy games, and the ability to personalize for teams. With ESPN's On Demand mobile video, customers will be able to access clips from ESPN television shows such as SportsCenter, Cold Pizza, Rome is Burning, Outside the Lines, Pardon the Interruption, and Around the Horn.

One third of Verizon's 59 million subscribers own phones that are compatible with V CAST.  For ESPN, the service means a larger customer base, and could attract more of the sports market to Verizon's service.

They cancelled their service within 3 years I believe. The service ended (I think) at the end of 2006 and they refunded folks with contracts that extended into 2007. Contrary to most people, I actually think the concept is good, but the implementation and their market strategy was wrong and plain misjudged.
