The indefinitely postponed StarCraft Ghost left RTS fans unsatisfied
A StarCraft sequel could be announced as soon as May 19 at South Korean gaming tournament

Although Blizzard may have little financial reason to divert its attentions away from its fantasy-based MMO cash cow, speculation during recent months points to a possible return of the company’s classic sci-fi franchise. Reports coming from Korean sources indicate that a StarCraft sequel could be making a public appearance sometime this year.

Korean pro-gaming site Fighter Forum (translated) claims that there will be a beta version of StarCraft 2 coming out before the end of the year. Furthermore, the site cites Hanbitsoft, the distributor of StarCraft in Korea, as being aware that the sequel will have a new race and additional units.

Korea’s apparent lead in information surrounding the classic Blizzard sci-fi franchise may be due to StarCraft’s still-rabid following in South Korea. Professional matches against celebrity StarCraft players are often televised for the mainstream public, who seems to have a wide acceptance of pro-gaming. E-sports and broadcast companies would likely need to know of plans for StarCraft 2 so that they may make the appropriate preparations for the transition to the new game.

Predictably, Blizzard is remaining tight-lipped on its future projects, though the developer does plan to reveal a new product at the Worldwide Invitational tournament next month in Korea. According to another South Korean source, This Is Game (translated), Blizzard is inviting more than a hundred broadcasting teams from around the world for this announcement.

"We do intend to announce a new product at the Worldwide Invitational next month in Korea, and we appreciate the enthusiasm and interest in getting an advance look at what that will be, but players will have to wait until May 19th to find out more," read a statement that a Blizzard representative provided to DailyTech.

Blizzard, however, is neither confirming nor denying that the new product could be a new StarCraft game, but does promise that the franchise will inevitably see a return. The statement continued, "Also, we have a very strong connection with the characters and settings of StarCraft, and we do plan to revisit that universe at some point in the future, but we don't have anything new to announce in that regard at present."

The Blizzard Worldwide Invitational will be held at the Olympic Gymnastics and Fencing Stadiums in Seoul, South Korea on May 19 and 20.

what killed was the morons who decided it should be a CONSOLE game and not a pc game. that was the last news for it before it got canned. What moron would make a legendary pc game into a console game? Ghost looked really cool too. It would have been stellar if the right people made it.

Yup, Hellgate:London, all the Diablo devs (or at least the big names) are working on that game. Diablo's future doesn't look too bright Blizzard owns the TM for it and that's about all they have left. Even if they tried I think a lot of it's 'soul' would be gone

Roger that!

Conincidently, I spent a few hours this weekend digging up my old "Collector's Edition" of D3 to install on my notebook, being one of the few games that will run on Intel's pathetic GMA 950.

I'm struck my just how many "older" gamers yearn for the simplistic, gratuitous gameplay of games like Diablo. Say what you will of a nearly 10 year old game, but simply put: I had ALOT of fun playing Diablo!

Diablo 3 would represent one of the most hotly anticipated games of 2007....

(IF they announced it ;-)

Ok, you're just asking for a flame war with this one.

Diablo and Starcraft are completely different genres, so comparing them in this way is hardly objective. If you enjoy Diablo more, great, but some people might like RTS games better than RPGs or hack 'n' slash games.

Besides, there's no argument to be made that Diablo is better. Diablo II might be better, and it did sell more copies AFAIK (though Starcraft has a larger online following to this day), but no true fan of both worlds or genres would really say the original Diablo was better than Starcraft.

I love both, but I'd much rather see Starcraft II. We've seen some great RTSs over the last few years, but none that had the same online following as Starcraft. Warcraft III is pretty good, but it never had the same following, and the Starcraft universe IMHO is better.
/me Awaits flames from WoW players

Besides, you can't expect a Diablo III. Diablo II did something unique with the online system. It's basically a 2D MMO with half the complexity and none of the fees. That sells a good number of copies, but maintaining it to the point Diablo II was and still is maintained is expensive, and 2D is out these days.

No, I'm not.

Although 90% of posters here need little reason to start one.

I said nothing in my post of Starcraft. I have zero interest in the title. I honestly couldn't care less about Starcraft.

If the announcement is another Starcraft title, BFD.

I'm not sure how you equate appreciation for D2 to animosity for Starcraft.

Everyone here on the DT boards need to calm down and have some fruit...

This one is Starcraft not Diablo III :(

They ARE working on D-III though - although about 2/3rds of the Diablo team left to do Hellgate: London, the remaining 1/3rd of Blizzard North was relocated and new hires were added last year for an "undisclosed project".

It doesnt seem like they're part of the Starcraft team and we know they don't work on WoW ... so....

Also Blizzard registered a bunch of domain names last year suggestive of a Diablo MMO.

Its all speculative but they're have been whispers that once Starcraft II is done D-III is next and it may be as a group/raid centric MMO to offset WoW's more casual focus.

Anyone else?

I still play Starcraft. The game strikes a balance between having each race be very unique, while making the game not too complicated. An example of a complicated game would be Supreme commander. Just the feel of the game isn't to my liking, and there are too many buildings/units. What about Warcraft3? Well, its a very fun game also, but...i cannot explain why i still play starcraft and not WC3.

I feel the same way...Starcraft is just so good no other game has ever been able to replace it....the balance is just soooo good, even with the crappy graphics and AI of the period. I think this is why Blizzard has been hesitant to release a sequel-they know they have to get it PERFECT otherwise no one will buy it (instead we will all keep playing the original)

RE: Anyone else?
By Alpha4 on 4/30/2007 6:38:03 PM , Rating: 2
I know what you mean, I feel the same way. I would attribute my preference of SC over WC3 to the game's Macro base & army management as well as micro style gameplay. In Starcraft we can enjoy matches that scale to the point where players are controlling armies of close to a hundred units whereas in Warcraft III we're stuck managing the same 12 paladins or Ogre Magi all match.

SC rox. best rts ever made, kinda obvious just is old now and needs like a lot of visual changes and resolution increases.

i would just want it to run at like a higher resolution and also utilize advanced textures and lighting. i wouldnt even want a new one if they could just give that.

I think that was a Starcraft mod or total conversion for C&C Generals that was eventually shut down by Blizzard. Bit of a shame though, as it looked quite good for a mod.

I wondered that at first, cause of the experience stars that kept popping up during the game (like in generals).

That's really amazing for a mod, lots of polish.

It is nearly impossible to please the fans, they will be so hard core tuned to starcraft as it is they will be unlikely to take any changes in a positive light. It will be interesting to see what happens. Perhaps the Koreans are more open minded then the NA & EU gamers though.

Blizzard has done it before. Warcraft 2 and 3 were very successful. Of course there will be some people who are disappointed, but that happens with any sequel.

This isn't always the case, especially for Blizzard. I thought Diablo II was much better than the original Diablo.

South Korea
By dreddly on 4/30/2007 6:13:35 PM , Rating: 2
When I was living in Seoul late last year, I counted one Starcraft tournament live on 6 cable stations. The service provider had 2 channels dedicated to gaming and about 55% of that was Starcraft.

It must still be a cash cow over there because I saw retail copies going for $45 US in November 2006. I can pick them up here for $10.

Blizzard is really going to have to get it right though, or there will be a massive outcry. Any slight imbalance in gameplay could make a huge difference for tournaments.

They should get those pro gamers in korea to beta test it for a while to get the gameplay in balance.

I'd say Starcraft but..
By just4U on 5/1/2007 12:42:15 PM , Rating: 2
Common sense (from my point of view) would indicate they'd be going with a starcraft anouncement. It's been awhile after all.

However, it is the 10th aniversary of Diablo, I am pretty sure it was released in 1997. So it could be a third installment in the series.

I am betting that Blizzard's new plan of action is to release their franchise game followed up by a expansion, then the eventual mmo release based on the same title (which ever it is)

Overall, I believe their May announcement is in fact Starcraft2. It just makes to much sense.

OH and here is some wishful thinking for all the fans out there....

May 19th: Blizzard has announced new games based upon their popular franchises Diablo and Starcraft to coincide with the launch of their new Battlenet service expected to be released in Q4 2008.

Their is a collective cheer around the gaming community. ;)

World of Starcraft? ;)
By rushfan2006 on 5/1/2007 11:10:42 AM , Rating: 2
...of course its not, but I honestly think an MMO in the Starcraft universe would be more interesting that WoW (and I play WoW btw). I think it would need tremendous work to flesh out enough content to make a huge MMO like WoW out of it...after it let's face there is way more material on Warcraft than Starcraft, still it is possible.

Anyway...I'm sure the announcement will be another Starcraft game -- which would suit me just fine as I thoroughly enjoyed Starcraft....my only gripe with that game is the maps were way too small and not enough units (different)...when you look at today's massive RTS games you can clearly understand where I'm coming from.

RE: World of Starcraft? ;)

I think i would assassinate the entire vivendi corporate team single handedly if they released the next SC as some lame assed 1st person shooter/mmorpg for 15 a month, instead of the RTS version 2.

that, would not be a purchase.

SC: Ghost was never released, and pretty much all mention of it has been removed from Blizzard sites.

People assume the project has been cancelled, even thought Blizzard has never officially said so.

I hope Starcraft 2 is really an RTS. I'm sure the starcraft-world is rich enough for them to make MMORPG with, but they shouldn't bother until WoW subscriptions start to decline, and I want another RTS I can get into.
C&C may have been the reason the genre took off, but I've always found that the blizzard RTS games a little more interesting.

Starcraft Ghost
By BrynS on 4/30/2007 6:36:47 PM , Rating: 2
Yeah, given Starcraft's popularity in South Korea, announcing a sequel there would make sense, although there's been some recent publicity of Blizzard job postings looking for devs for a "next-gen mmo", so it could possibly be some sort of Starcraft Universe mmo, although I think the former or a totally new IP is more likely.

Sorry to nitpick, but Starcraft Ghost (which wasn't an RTS) was "indefinitely postponed" last year, so it would not be possible for it to have left RTS fans unsatisfied as the most recent game from the franchise, to paraphrase the blurb under the Ghost render, unless of course the blurb was intended to refer to fan's dissatisfaction regarding it's effective cancellation as the most recent Starcraft game under development?

Let it be Starcraft 1
By Visual on 5/2/2007 5:21:47 AM , Rating: 2
What I really want is Starcraft 1, same gameplay, same units, same everything just improved graphics. Maybe increased map sizes, player limits, unit limits... better battle.net match-up ala wc3... Better and customizable AI, improved custom trigger system, unit editor would be great too. Still, essentially the original game, upgraded for modern hardware.

Well I wouldn't mind some new units and abilities, something like an expansion... hell, maybe even a new race, xel-naga or zerg-toss hybrid or whatever... the campaign storyline has a lot of cliffhangers to explain.

But if it's an entirely new game, it will have a hell of a lot to live up to. I'd hate to see anything from the original change... I just can't imagine it any other way, and I hate the thought.
On the other hand, if they manage to do it well enough, it could be a huge winner. They better be very careful though...
