SanDisk's Sansa Connect MP3 Player Allows Direct Music Downloads

Microsoft may have been trying to bring WiFi to the forefront with "social networking" on its Zune music player, but its implementation is quite limited in its current form. Owners of Zune portable music players have the ability to transmit songs over WiFi to other Zunes, but directly connecting to the Internet (for now) is out of the question.

SanDisks's new Sansa Connect doesn't have the sharing features of the Microsoft Zune, but it does allow users to connect directly to the Internet via a wireless hot spot to download music or distribute photos. No PC is needed to accomplish these tasks.

“It’s about accessing music of your choice wherever you are. If you’re listening to new songs from a music service and find ones you want to keep, you can bring them into your library and don’t have to wait until you get back to your PC. If you want to tell your friends about your discoveries, the Sansa Connect will also allow you to share music suggestions over the Web—anytime, anywhere—over an open wireless Internet network,” said Eric Bone, product marketing director for SanDisk’s audio and video line.

As far as features go, the Sansa Connect has 4GB of internal storage as well as a microSD slot for further expansion. A 2.2-inch color screen is used for viewing pictures and navigating through your music library and an internal speaker allows you to jam to tunes without headphones.

The Sansa Connect will be available in retail store in late March for $249.99.
