Microsoft is in the giving mood for the holidays

In what could be seen as a big plus to all Xbox 360 users out there (save for those that have units that are more than a year old), Microsoft has extended the warranty of all Xbox 360 consoles from 90 days to a full year in the United States and Canada. This latest move comes exactly three months after Microsoft decided to offer free repairs to Xbox 360 manufactured before 01/01/2006.

As if the case with most all electronic purchases, the one-year warranty period starts from the original date of purchase. Customers that have already paid out-of-pocket for Xbox 360 repairs after the original 90-day warranty period, but before the new one-year warranty period will receive automatic credits for repair costs. Customers will not need to contact Microsoft at all for the reimbursement checks which will be mailed out within 10 weeks.

"Customer satisfaction is a central focus and priority for the Xbox 360 system," said Jeff Bell, corporate VP of Global Marketing for Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business. “The Xbox 360 system now offers this extended warranty upgrade. It is truly the industry's most compelling home entertainment offering."

The free warranty upgrade should also be welcome news to Xbox 360 owners who've had their consoles bricked by the Fall Dashboard Update. There were numerous reports of Xbox 360's being "taken out" by the update. One California man, Kevin Ray, was asked to fork over $140 to repair his Xbox 360 after the Fall Dashboard Update failed. Ray responded by starting a class action lawsuit over the matter.

Personally, I'm absolutely gob-smacked that the 360 didn't already come with a 1-year warranty. Seriously, pretty much everything comes with a 1-year warranty or longer so only getting 90-days on something that costs so much is amazing.

Sorry, no points to Microsoft for providing something that should have been in the box from Day 1.

Most previous game systems came with a ninety day warranty. At least the Xbox 1, PS2, PS1, Dreamcast.

Really, it wasn't without precedent, but I'm glad it changed.

The PS2 has a 1 year warranty, not 90 days. Your right about the others.

I'm glad MS finally changed to 1 year. I had 2 xbox and both failed on me 3 times and paid a total of $450 + shipping to have it repaired. It was at the time it cost $300 and it broke after a few days when warranty expired.

I can remember, when I first opened my super Nintendo, After it was first released... A little slip fell out explaining "Life time warranty" Anyone know what that was all about?

Actually a whole assload of things only come with 90 day warranty, a lot of electronics stuff anyway....except for the more expensive stuff..like a $3000 tv for example.

1 year warranty is good. Good move on MS to do so.

And really if people want to turn out dramatic bashing story out of MS simply upping the warranty to 1 year...they just need something to complain about..some people aren't happy unless they are miserable about something. ;)

Its just business...no real story here...go back to sleep everyone.

well its better late than never, but yeah i feel the same way.

a 1 year warranty barely makes it into my expectations list. im used to having upto 3 or in some cases 5 year warranties on some of the electronics i buy, and for something like a console that is expected to last 3-4 years if not more...a 90 day warranty was ludicrous...especially when the asking price is £300 (and was higher upon initial release)

too little too late imo. i guess now they are confident the boxes can operate for a year without breaking. im sure thats what it is. its only taken them a year n a bit to get a level of quality that should of been there in the first place.

yet another case of rushing something out the door, to get one over on the competition, and then using paying beta testers to finish your job for you
