DC shows off new car-to-car communication system

Automation is quickly starting to flood automobiles these days and DaimlerChrysler is putting the finishing touches on a system that could make traveling roads safer for drivers around the world. DC's Wireless Local Danger Warning (Willwarn) joins the likes of self-steering, automated parking, radar-based cruise control, radar-based rear collision detection and traffic/weather-enabled GPS systems.

Willwarn uses onboard ABS, ESP, EBD and GPS systems to monitor hazardous road conditions (fog, black ice, pot holes, etc.) or broken down vehicles. The data accumulated is then transmitted via an ad-hoc WiFi connection to following or oncoming vehicles within a 500 meter radius. Cars near the edge of the 500 meter radius of a signaling vehicle can also become a beacon to relay data to more vehicles.

The information collected is then displayed to the driver so that proper precautions can be taken to avoid or safely navigate problem areas on the road.

DaimlerChrysler hopes to have the new system in place by the end of the decade with high-end Mercedes and Maybach models most likely getting first dibs.

I'm not sure I follow. You make an analogy to a wireless network..but then what?

i swear i can't stand people who bash on new ideas, that's how PROGRESS is made!!!!! if we're all to stick to safe conservative ideas then innovation will stagnate. Please, to the original poster who will rely on his "eyes and ears", why dont you also rely on your legs since the idea of cars were ridiculed when they were first invented? stay off the boards and stick to simple things instead of bashing innovation.

I can't stand anybody who swallows marketing without stopping to think about whether a feature is really as good as marketed, or might just have real issues.

Progress is made by considering the BAD as well as the GOOD. What you can't stand is critical in evaluating and deploying new technology.

Progress is fine when you are talking about ovens that cook faster....or about refridgerators that order a resupply of butter or OJ when you are out...hey I think its great that we have HDTVs and more energy efficient homes today as well....

But what is scary is the dependence on technology when its safety concerns like this driving technology. Don't you get just a little uncomfortable when you think how much we are slowly getting computers to do for us -- don't you think of how vulnerable it makes us, how much more lazy it makes us...the mindset that "well if the computer will protect me I can be more careless in what I do"...none of this bothers you at all?

I know it does me....not everything NEW is "progress" as well...and that is a peeve of MINE....

Finally it is funny (not in a ha ha way, but funny interesting way)....that the system will be tested in Maybachs and Mercedes (likely high end).....isn't like a "cheapy" Maybach around 125,000? LOL.
