Plus a few whacky Canadians decide to smash a PS3 in front of wide-eyed fans

“Finally, the wait is over,” is probably the first thought on the minds of many eager PlayStation 3 campers across North America after sitting outside store fronts for hours, if not days.

Chris Toribio was the first to receive a PlayStation 3 at Sony’s premiere launch event at the Metreon in San Francisco.

“I’m going to go home and dream about it,” said Toribio according to Dean’s blog. “I’m going to go sleep. It was way worth it. I met a whole lot of people. The publicity is a good experience for me.”

When it came his turn to pick up his console, he chose to do so without picking up a game to go along with it. He explained that he was too tired for gaming, instead preferring to just watch the Ricky Bobby pack-in movie instead.

While the wait is over for those whose patience paid off, the waiting game continues for the rest of the crowd who were greater than the number of machines in stock. After hints of reduced launch numbers which many fans refused to believe, Sony COO Jack Tretton confirmed that there were fewer units shipped to stores than the original target of 400,000. While official numbers are unavailable, the shortfall is expected to be in the tens of thousands.

“This is not a perfect science manufacturing this device,” Tretton said to Mercury News, referring to the manufacturing issues surrounding the Blu-ray Disc drive.

Sony hopes to replenish supplies of PlayStation 3 as soon as possible, with the second shipment of consoles rumored to arrive as soon as next week.

Meanwhile, thousands of PlayStation 3 are starting to hit online auction sites such as eBay. Some bids have hit absolute jokes at $89 million, while others remain ridiculous but plausible. Nevertheless, the average person who sells his or her PlayStation 3 on eBay will likely see a two- or three-fold return on investment.

Sadly, the fears surrounding PlayStation 3 shortages have driven some store locations to complete chaos. The following is a list of several unfortunate incidents from the launch:

The PlayStation 3 also played center to a couple media stunts. One such stunt came from magazine PC Gamer, who approached those who were waiting in line at the Metreon to swear off PlayStation 3, promising that he or she would never, ever own the console in exchange one completely tricked-out Falcon Northwest gaming PC. It worked.

As part of an ongoing series, the guys behind Smash My PlayStation 3 camped out for days at a Best Buy in Toronto, only to acquire the machine and smash it into oblivion in front of onlookers right outside the store. Watch the video.

Apparently not only are you risking your health by not sleeping for hours and standing in the cold, but you're now going to be risking your life as long as manufacturers like Sony release really limited supplies of consoles.

So is it worth your life to potentially make a grand or two? Or is it worth it to play as crappy as they get first gen games?

Like the original poster said, they need therapy but sadly there aren't enough therapists alive to treat all the people that need it, these idiots need to be standing outside in lines of therapist clinics not Electronic stores.
