Plus a few whacky Canadians decide to smash a PS3 in front of wide-eyed fans

“Finally, the wait is over,” is probably the first thought on the minds of many eager PlayStation 3 campers across North America after sitting outside store fronts for hours, if not days.

Chris Toribio was the first to receive a PlayStation 3 at Sony’s premiere launch event at the Metreon in San Francisco.

“I’m going to go home and dream about it,” said Toribio according to Dean’s blog. “I’m going to go sleep. It was way worth it. I met a whole lot of people. The publicity is a good experience for me.”

When it came his turn to pick up his console, he chose to do so without picking up a game to go along with it. He explained that he was too tired for gaming, instead preferring to just watch the Ricky Bobby pack-in movie instead.

While the wait is over for those whose patience paid off, the waiting game continues for the rest of the crowd who were greater than the number of machines in stock. After hints of reduced launch numbers which many fans refused to believe, Sony COO Jack Tretton confirmed that there were fewer units shipped to stores than the original target of 400,000. While official numbers are unavailable, the shortfall is expected to be in the tens of thousands.

“This is not a perfect science manufacturing this device,” Tretton said to Mercury News, referring to the manufacturing issues surrounding the Blu-ray Disc drive.

Sony hopes to replenish supplies of PlayStation 3 as soon as possible, with the second shipment of consoles rumored to arrive as soon as next week.

Meanwhile, thousands of PlayStation 3 are starting to hit online auction sites such as eBay. Some bids have hit absolute jokes at $89 million, while others remain ridiculous but plausible. Nevertheless, the average person who sells his or her PlayStation 3 on eBay will likely see a two- or three-fold return on investment.

Sadly, the fears surrounding PlayStation 3 shortages have driven some store locations to complete chaos. The following is a list of several unfortunate incidents from the launch:

The PlayStation 3 also played center to a couple media stunts. One such stunt came from magazine PC Gamer, who approached those who were waiting in line at the Metreon to swear off PlayStation 3, promising that he or she would never, ever own the console in exchange one completely tricked-out Falcon Northwest gaming PC. It worked.

As part of an ongoing series, the guys behind Smash My PlayStation 3 camped out for days at a Best Buy in Toronto, only to acquire the machine and smash it into oblivion in front of onlookers right outside the store. Watch the video.

This illustrates how sheep like PS3 people are

It's simply amazing how ignorant people who go postal over PS3s are. I realize most consumers are dumber than rocks and that the sellers of this garbage manipulate these clueless people like sheep, but you'd think if they have enough money to buy a PS3 or Xbox that they'd have enough money for therapy.

What a waste of humanity.

Most of them are spending their savings or putting it on a credit card.

And yes these people are truly pathetic. If owning a game console means more to you than being a decent human being, then you don't deserve to live.

True, alot of people are camping out to resell it... But to who? There are a great deal of total losers that are willing to pay the $2000 price to have one of these early that these re-sellers are selling to.

Its really scary. This is another one of those reasons why some people in other parts of the world hate Americans and think we are too disconnected from reality.

- Printers that print custom patterns directly onto cakes
- Therapy for house pets
- Segway - yes its a personal walking device
- Violence over a console game

Actually the $2000 price seems to be high on ebay right now. Things are setting down now that there soo many on there. They seem to be selling between 800 an 1300 for the most part now, some higher but many are not sold at all.

Ebay has reviews sections for items and on it they track the average selling price.

I can't find the link now but the last time I saw it, it said $1,4500

The real disconnect from reality is idiots in elected positions who blame the manufacturer for individuals acting barbaric and their own inability to control it. Not to mention the press that parrots this thinking without question. My neighbor mentioned that she thought Sony should be held responsible for some teenager acting violent. This type of absolute lack of reason and personal responsibility is the clearest sign of our disconnect from reality.

Of course, the US definitely does not have a monopoly on this sort of thinking.

So easy to sit here and blame where it is safe I guess.

You're pathetic for camping out in line overnight to get one and you're an idiot for buying one on ebay.

Since we are all in to blaming somebody, who should we blame for this no-win situation??

quote:
The real losers are the ones who take time to insult people buying PS3s on internet forums for absolutely no reason. If you don't want a PS3 or an Xbox, vote with your wallet, flinging meaningless insults over the internet does no one any good, your words are an utter waste of bandwidth.

Please everyone, remember, this is a free country. If you don't like something, don't buy it, but don't criticize people who have different desires, because then you look like an ignorant jerk.

Sure thing champ - what you don't seem to realize is that people were behaving in a CRIMINAL manner in an attempt to get a PS3. When posting on the internet that criminal are retards is illegal, maybe your argument will have some mertit. Until then, I think the people resorting to crime to get a PS3 are fair game for flaming, sorry.

The people who are legitimately trying to get one aren't...

Pretty much just endorising what another poster already said.

Just in my own words.

I think the real anger is over the fact that in some cases there are select idiots who were criminally trying to attain one -- inciting fear, employing intimidation tactics and in some cases actually inflicting injury on people who legitimately got a PS3.

I have no sympathy for those thugs and they should be drug around the block a few times off the bumper of my car....

So for those idiots I don't feel one bit bad that the behavior of camping and acting like complete idiots gets flamed.

Go cry a river.

Our Best Buy had 28 units. A friend of mine, who is also an employee, was with some friends at the front of 42 person line (as of Thursday night at around 10). People kept asking him how many there were, and since he isnt allowed to say he just told people at the end of the line 'I cant tell you exactly how many we have, but I do know we dont have enough for you guys to one.' Despite multiple other people telling them they are wasting their time, they stayed. They froze their butts off in the cold, fog filled night to get NOTHING.

Apparently not only are you risking your health by not sleeping for hours and standing in the cold, but you're now going to be risking your life as long as manufacturers like Sony release really limited supplies of consoles.

So is it worth your life to potentially make a grand or two? Or is it worth it to play as crappy as they get first gen games?

Like the original poster said, they need therapy but sadly there aren't enough therapists alive to treat all the people that need it, these idiots need to be standing outside in lines of therapist clinics not Electronic stores.

So maybe 20 or 30 people out of probably hundred's of thousands act violently and all of a sudden all "PS3 people" are sheep? Grow up.

By rushfan2006 on 11/21/2006 2:34:09 PM , Rating: 2
Yep they are sheep....any more questions? ;)

"It's simply amazing how ignorant people who go postal over PS3s are"

Yup... The difference between you and I on this issue is that the idiocy of people HAS ceased to amaze me. LOL
