Remember: supply and cost are negatively correlated

Sony touts its PlayStation 3 as much more than just a gaming machine - it's supposedly a complete media center. Enterprising consumers, however, see it as something else: a money printer. Judging from the fallout from the Japanese launch, a considerable number of consoles were purchased with the sole purpose of making a profit.

According to an Internet user's blog, an individual called "Eiji" and his three friends ransacked approximately 30 stores in Japan two months ago for reservations, and came up big on launch day, acquiring 150 PlayStation 3 consoles. With more units than most retail stores' allocations, "Eiji" and his friends are seeking to profit from their foresight. They certainly aren't the only ones who are trying to cash in on the demand curve, as an informal poll of those interested in buying a PlayStation 3 at launch shows at there are more people aiming to flip it for a quick profit than keep it for gaming.

Prior to launch, many were selling pre-orders through eBay, where auctions ran up to several thousand dollars. Supply of (not quite) guaranteed pre-orders were in short supply, and the theories of economics took over.

Now that Japanese online auction sites have been flooded with PlayStation 3s, it appears that the laws of supply and demand have been called into duty. Of course, supply for the PlayStation 3 is still at an all-time high, but with a much greater pool of product to bid on, auction prices have dropped dramatically since launch day in Japan.

Thousands of PS3 consoles have hit Yahoo! Japan auctions, with some smart bidders grabbing machines for near-retail prices. The Associated Press reports that, "some had game software thrown in with the machine, selling near the retail price of about 60,000 yen (US$510; €400) for the more expensive model with a 60-gigabyte hard drive, and 50,000 yen (US$420; €330) for the cheaper model."

Undoubtedly, U.S. auction Web sites will see a rapid influx of PlayStation 3 following launch this Friday, November 17, which opens up the possibility of dropping auction-end prices.

I was planning on waiting in line tonight just for the profits, but now this article makes me second guess myself. But I guess in the worst case scenari, I'll either make my money back or have a PS3.

it would be absolutely hilarious for some smartarse to buy up 10 ps3's for profit, only to make a loss after factoring in ebay fees and whatnot.

wishful thinking or reality? we'll see after friday.

a possible thing that sony could have done to alleviate some of the pain is to auction off the first couple of ps3's on their own -- that way they actually make the profits themselves.
The first 10 could actually go to charity as a gesture of goodwill, the next 90 would be profits.

then they should under report the number of stock they have in order to "announce" later that they had more stock than anticipated; hopefully prompting some of the ebay sellers to think twice about ACTUAL supply vs. demand.

of course, having more actual stock really helps.

People have been camping out for days at all the stores around here. I was thinking of grabbing an extra one to flip, but I have a job and its worth more for me to work than waste 3 days standing in line.

Most of the people I've seen in line look like the guy on the south park WOW episode. So I can only assume they have no life...

I was wondering when the masses would come to their senses and stop paying out the face for items they can get regular price just by waiting a couple weeks. I guess it's pretty obvious to a lot of people that when everyone you talk to that has a PS3 preorder is planning on selling it to make money, you will end up with an oversupply of overpriced consoles! Durr, makes sense to me...

It doesn't help that the PS3 has had several publicized design and production problems, backward compatibility issues, a crap online strategy (compared to Live, that is), and next to no good launch titles. I'm not sure that even the early adopters want to fork over excessive wads of cash for that. We'll see what happens after the U.S. launch, however. U.S. buyers tend to be less fickle about spending ridiculous amounts of money on things just to be first on the block and show off to the neighbors.

As the old proverb says:
"A fool and his money..."

As Nvidia has shown with the 8800's, there's a relatively large market of stupid people with too much money, who will pay anything to be ahead of the curve.

Well, considering how much more graphically amazing a GeForce 8800-series is compared to anything the PS3 will ever be able to produce... paying $460-660 is almost a bargain... I'm actually suprised that the 8800GTX isn't over $700, I thought for sure this would be the generation to exceed that threshold.

RE: Hmm...
By Araemo on 11/16/2006 9:27:26 AM , Rating: 3
You think they're going to sell a "lot" of 8800's at those prices? I think you're missing two things, #1: High end video cards are ALWAYS niche products.

#2: the price for that kind of thing is related to the expected supply. If they could afford to mass-produce them, they would, and they would lower the price so that they can sell as many as they produce. At this point, yields are probably very low(relatively speaking, compared to a 7300. ;) ), and the overall die size means it is literally expensive in raw materials, even at 100% yield. They're going to charge as much as they can get away with. Granted, comparing price/performance does make them about the same 'value' as a 7800gs right now, but if a 7800gs is more performance than I need, then the extra 'value' doesn't actually provide ME with any value. ;)

Myself and many other people will likely wait another year, buy the Geforce 9600GT that performs as well as your 8800GTS, for less than half the price. ;) Sure, if you absolutely HAVE to play the newest games at 25xx by 18xx w/ all eye candy turned on.. right now.. then maybe it's worth $600 to you. Personally, I can find plenty of things to do with my time to kill a year before playing the newest games, and I can do more varied things because I didn't spend $600 on a GPU. ;)

There are a lot of people who pretty much spend everything they earn. I know a couple people like that. They don't bother saving for the future at all. This guy I know is basically poor and has no car and not even a job most of the time but he still buys all the expensive consoles and games and things. Because it's not that hard to earn that money if that's all you care about doing with it.

This is for all those prospective buyers of PS3-desperate to
buy at any cost or any price-

Read this -

"Last month, Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) co-chairman Jack Tretton admitted the launch allocations were more a "target" than a precise logistical statistic, and as we've noted before, there's an advantage in being able to claim stores sold out on the launch day and consumers were left disappointed - it stresses the apparent popularity of the product."

This explains it all-the motives behind the PS3 launch.

Solution- BUY YOURSELF A GOOD VACATION
& POSTPONE buying PS3 (Spend on yourself & not on Sony)

And once again Sony steals another idea from nintendo by offering older games for download over their network.

Yah, and Nintendo stole the idea from Microsoft, who in turn stole the idea from freeware emulator devs.

All of those old console games will be playable on the PS3 for free anyways... since there will be linux ports of most of the popular console and arcade emulators out there before too long.

I, for one, am very excited about the possibilities Sony has left open to amateur developers.

If you talking about the Xbox360 live Arcade, Nintendo talked about this whole "old games" thing before MS began talking about the Arcade. In fact for many years (well since the we had the first details about what would the "Revolution" be) it's been the only thing that Nintendo said about their new console. Now if they stole it from some secret plans that came from Microsoft..I can't say. But they did talk about it first.

But you are right about the fact that they stole (nintento) the idea drom freeware emulator. In fact I'm pretty sure that Nintendo came with the idea of emulating all their previous systems with in mind that it would help them fight the "emulators" that Nintendo have tried to fight since the begining.

Despite the cute subtitle, there's another part to "supply and cost are negatively correlated," which is that prices will tend to move towards equilibrium based on the supply and demand curves.

Why is this important? Because it means that there may not be as much demand as we were all expecting in Japan, if current supplies are enough.

Caveat: This trend needs to be watched over time, since that's the only way to see where the equilibrium price point is.

By stromgald on 11/16/2006 11:13:08 AM , Rating: 2
Those were my thoughts exactly. Price or "cost" is where the supply and demand curves meet. Since price is dropping, it means that the demand curve is shifting to the left/down or supply curve is shifting to the right/up.

Basically, supply exceeded the demand at the original price, and now the price is dropping.

Did anyone NOT see this coming? Half the people that bought the 360 last year at the Target I was working at were buying it to sell it and make money. Look at their launch lineup and tell me they still wanted it to play Tony Hawk 8 or 37 or 149 or whatever it was.

Yeah whenever my idiot friends ask me if I'm getting a PS3 and then they get surprised when I say "no." I ask them what they are interested in playing on it if I gave them one on launch day. They usually have no clue.

It ain't Christmas Yet
By deeznuts on 11/16/2006 1:16:20 PM , Rating: 3
Guys, two factors will keep prices high IMO. First, the initial huge one day supply of PS3s will dry out. If someone is looking for one in a few weeks, I think the supply won't be as large.

Second, at least in the US, Christmas season after Thanksgiving is going to drive demand up largely.

I think the patient ones who plan to sell (Me, if I get one hah, I'm not waiting two days for it though) will be rewarded by timing the sale.

You know
By Trisped on 11/16/2006 11:48:50 AM , Rating: 2
If Sony had waited to ship until they had enough supply for the demand, people wouldn't be able to resell the systems on Ebay for 2-10x the price.

For a while I was thinking that they needed to make the bundles more expensive some how, do discourage people from reselling, then I realized the real problem. Sony didn't make enough. At least Nintendo cares about how much their consumers pay for the systems, as they provide a very large number of units at launch.

*asbestos suit*

Maybe these kids arent going for profit. Maybe they're just trying to be nice guys and auction off what others were unable to camp for.

I was just at the mall today and play-tested the PS3 for a minute. Motorstorm had really good looking models and textures, though the landscape was kind of bland, and WOW if there were more than three vehicles on screen, the framerate dipped down to like 20-30FPS. For such a "High End" machine, I was fairly disappointed, but I'm still looking to get one since I have a $500 giftcard with their name on it. Besides, maybe it was just a beta? Sell or keep, TBD.

foresaw this kind of.....
By solgae1784 on 11/16/2006 12:47:07 PM , Rating: 2
A lot of people complained that PS3 is too expensive. It seems like majority thinks so, when I saw that not many ppl actually want to keep the PS3. It's also possible that people are now getting smarter with bidding on auctions.

Admittely, I was sort of considering to get one for resell. Now I'm leaning toward not bothering with it since it seems like too many people wants to get it just to resell for profit.

So no one really wants the PS3
By OCedHrt on 11/16/2006 12:50:27 PM , Rating: 2
So basically, nearly all the people who waited in line/are waiting in line to buy a PS3 are trying to sell for profit to a non-existent market (no demand). ROFL.
