Retailer GameStop will be unable to fulfill pre-orders

With all the rabid anticipation surrounding the PlayStation 3, it may sadden many of you to hear that Japan will not be the only territory that will face a cut in its launch numbers.

According to a GameSpot report, North American retailer GameStop (who also runs EB Games) has received a launch allocation that is less than its number of pre-orders.

On October 10, GameStop took PlayStation 3 pre-orders, which sold out nationwide within minutes. Most stores limited pre-orders to eight units, which was based on original Sony estimates on availability.

Now, it appears that many GameStop stores will be unable to honor its "launch day" pre-orders. A GameStop representative confirmed this news, but had no idea as to the extent of the supply shortfall.

"We are beginning to notify our customers that our initial shipment of PS3 systems will not be what we expected," the representative said. "As this is not an ideal situation, we are asking employees to wait to purchase systems until the second shipment. We are anticipating having systems to cover reservations before Christmas."

Customers with PS3 pre-orders from GameStop can expect to be contacted by phone shortly to confirm the status of their reservation. Those who will be left out of the initial round on launch day will be given a consolation item of a free used game or DVD of choice valued at $19.99 or less.

This development will have a ripple effect on those who have sold their pre-orders on eBay with the condition that the item will ship on launch day. Many eBay bidders will be very unhappy to learn that the thousands of dollars they spent on a launch-day PS3 will be facing delays.

Update: Analyst Colin Sebastian expects less PS3's on launch day than originally announced by Sony. He says:

"We expect Sony to deliver 150-200k units to stores in the United States for the launch; consumers without pre-orders may find it difficult to locate an available system. We estimate sales of approximately 750k PS3s domestically by year-end. We expect a more robust launch from Nintendo, with at least 1.2 million units sold in the U.S. and up to four million units shipped worldwide by year-end."

PS3 and Xbox 360 are already obselete! Dont even waist your money. Save up and buy windows vista with DirectX 10 and purchase a new over priced dx10 video card with it. You will truly see next generation gaming!!! Crysis is almost here. That game will make those 2 consoles look like a gameboy.

Probably shouldn't be feeding the troll, but...

If this picture is in-game, he might be right.

Because Xbox 360 and PS3 will have more users, they will also get more games designed specifically for them. Even more so in games that really stress the hardware. The best looking game on any system currently is probably Gears of War (at least in my opinion), and to get something better looking (not just in resolution, filtering, or AA) on the PC, you will have to wait for Crysis. And Crysis will probably remain the most demanding game for some time. Do you want to buy a new system only for Crysis? After a year (or two), when there are more games demanding that power, you could get the same setup much cheaper.

The first million unit seller on the PC (in the US) is at position 7, on the consoles at position 57.

I disagree. This round of the console wars seem much more in dispute than the last round. I'm of the opinion that the Wii may get the most unique games designed specifically for it while the Xbox 360 and PS3 being more traditional consoles will get the more cookie cutter games.

Your pricing in bunk... The only one that is correct is the 8800GTS.

I just meant that there is no need for a $1000 C2d e6800, even with a Geforce 8800GTX (which is also overkill). You can get the e6600 c2d for $300, also no need for Blue Ray. The 8800GTX is just the first high end card, many more mid and low end cards to come from ATI and Nvidia at decent prices.

Just knock off the $700 CPU and the $700 Blue Ray drive and thats alot of cash. The rest are ok, a bit high, but not out of the realm of a non-experienced shopper.

Oh dear, that price is still overly high. I got a system with that configuration (e6600, not e6800) minus the video card and plus a 21" LCD for $1000 + tax. I can assure you that once I get a nice R600, my computer will be able to chew up any console and spit it out. That makes for a $1200 computer with a monitor (no need to get highest end video card, virtually anything out of the DX10 series can destroy anything in the consoles) vs a 600$ console that can only play games and do nothing else (realistically, the 360 isn't supposed to run anything else and the Cell is complete bunk for anything remotely resembling general purpose). Gee... lemme think on that one.

CPU bound just means that its so damn fast that it can even be faster with a faster CPU (unlike the 7900GTX and ATI 1950xt's that dont benefit from it)... It does not require you buy the fastest consumer CPU on the planet at a heavy price premium.

I didnt say it would be cheap...Id bring that figure down to about 2K...we dont nee blue wont take advantage of that, for the PC anyways, for a long time to never. Id also drop the price for the 8800 GTX as I wouldnt get it until dx10 and crysis was need for it until then.

If you want to LISTEN to bluray movies, then a PS3 will be a whole lot better media centre than your future "EIGHT CORES 9900GTX" monster with 6 noisy fans ;-)

I'd like one of those, but not next to my television (looking forward to Crysis though). In fps gaming the fan noise tends to be drowned out by the machine gun and laser cannons. When listening to classical music or quieter passages in a feature length movie, excessive fan noise is objectionable and detracts from the experience. So there are two different markets.

PS3 is reportedly quieter than x360 too.

If I put a 160mm fan in my PC it would be just as quiet as the PS3. And if I really wanted to, I could run my Core 2 Duo quite safely with just a heatsink.

Too bad I don't have a 51 inch LCD Widescreen for my PC.
