Just what exactly are these ladies doing?
Microsoft's Zune reaches some eager fans ahead of schedule

It looks as though some stores have jumped the gun ahead of the Zune's official November 14 launch date. The $249 player has shown up in a few stores across the nation including a Best Buy at the Union City Landing shopping center.

Microsoft is really talking up the social aspects of the Zune player with "Welcome to the social" plastered in big letters on the box. Also interesting is the "Hello from Seattle" greeting imprinted on the back of the Zune player.

Items included in the retail box are the player itself, a soft case, USB sync/charge cable, ear buds, installation CD, instruction manual and the 14-day free trial to Zune Marketplace that DailyTech has already discussed.

Also worthy of mention is that the Zune software struck its first blow on the populace with an installation error (see photo on right). Some have indicated that the error was likely caused by the install program trying to connect to Zune Marketplace which hasn't officially opened its doors. On the other hand, other early adopters have been able to install the software without issue.

I think Microsoft is screwed anyway. The Zune reviews I've been reading in the mainstream media have all been unfavorable. They bring up the same issues--some of them legitimate, others kind of stupid. The average Joe is probably going to base his purchasing decision on what Walt Mossberg or David Pogue think (regardless of whether Mossberg's and Pogue's reviews are truly accurate or unbiased).

Personally, I'm going to go down to the store on Tuesday and try out a Zune in person, then decide for myself whether I like it enough to buy one. Unfortunately for Microsoft, I don't most people will bother with that.

I think you give the average Joe too much credit. Most people are going to base their purchase a DAP off whether 1) it looks cool, and 2) whether his friends thinks it's cool.

I agree 100%, that is why Microsoft is going to have an almost impossible time trying to take market shares from Apple. Like the Ipod or not, it's running the MP3 market. Not to say MS won't sell, this will probably do fairly well.

The streaming wi-fi music thing was of interest to me until I read up on how restrictive it actually is. I'll be staying away from the Zune for sure.
