Paper launched Core 2 Extreme QX6700
Intel today lifted the performance embargo on its Kentsfield Core 2 Extreme QX6700 processor and surprise surprise the processor performs just as expected. In multi-threaded applications there’s plenty of improvement. Single-threaded applications show minimal to no gains at all. This is as expected and represents DailyTech’s previous in-house results.
Performance results aside, this embargo lift is only on the performance aspect of the processors. And by performance embargo I mean Editors are now able to share their results from in-house testing, unlike the on-site benchmarking at the fall 2006 Intel Developer Forum.
Nevertheless, the performance embargo lift comes a little early as the quad-core processors aren’t going to be available till November 15th. This was the previous NDA date but Intel decided to pull in the date. As with the previous Conroe Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Extreme launch, this one is a paper launch. Quad-core chips will start stocking at stores a week from Tuesday.
When the Core 2 Extreme QX6700 hits stores and OEM’s it won’t be cheap. It will be priced similarly to previous Extreme Edition processors at $999.99. Users wanting a more affordable quad-core processor will have to wait for Intel’s upcoming Core 2 Quad.
Now that Intel has kind of launched its quad-core processor, the remaining question is where is 4x4?
