IGN unboxes Sony's latest and greatest

The folks over at IGN had a chance to play around with Sony's upcoming PlayStation 3 console. While this is a most certainly a pre-release review system featuring burned Blu-ray game discs, it does give us a glimpse at what to expect when the PS3 starts hitting eBay, err retail shelves in the latter half of November.

Items in the box included the PS3, power cable, composite cables, a USB charging cable and a single wireless SIXAXIS controller. Also on hand for the IGN staffers were copies of Motorstorm, Resistance: Fall of Man and Genji: Days of the Blade.

One can't help of thinking of the Monolith from 2001: A Space Odyssey when looking at the image on the right. And that slippery smooth surface is sure to be a fingerprint magnet for your friends as they each attempt to lay a hand on it. There’s still no word as to whether the PS3 emits a shrieking high-pitched sound when touched…

SIXAXIS

I heard that when it comes to connecting a SIXAXIS controller to your PS2, you're required to plug it into the USB charger every time. Is that true? I mean, I didn't think Sony would do something that... taxing on the user. Although, I was told that was for connecting, I'm not sure if the person who told me meant setting or connecting.

Like for setting a controller on my XBOX, you have to press the XBOX's connect button then the controller's connect button. It's just like a wireless keyboard/mouse. So that's why I've been a bit weary when it comes to believing that about the controller. But for connecting a controller, all you do is press the Dashboard button in the middle.

So, I know there's people out there that'll fix any PS3 mistakes I make, so please set me straight ;).

I've never heard of it being used on the PS2, but since the console doesn't recognize Bluetooth signals it would have to be plugged if it were usable at all.

Err sorry, that was a typo. I meant PS3 for the entire comment. :)

Thanks for pointing it out!

No, its the same as the 360 in the way you press the button on the controller.

You can see some guy doing it here: http://www.joystiq.com/2006/10/27/playstation-3-on...

Ah, okay... I'm glad someone pointed that out and corrected my misconception!

Thank you.

Component?

I see a composite cable, but no component. Is this a mistake or did Sony finally decide that they should include a cable for their users to play in HD out of the box?

i think i've read elsewhere that there will be no component or HDMI cables included with the PS3.

thats cause more than 90% of people dont have a hdtv yet, and im guessing even though this system caters to people who have hdtvs, that more than 50% of people who buy this system, wont be seeing it in hd, hence the composite cables, though it would've been nice to see some component cables included as well (xbox360 had a nice combo set), 480p woot!!!

yeah i was pleasantly suprised to see component cables included with my 360. i guess i have to shop around for HDMI cables for the PS3.

Thats correct. But despite the retail con artists playing on the new buzz word you can get a quality gold tipped HDMI cables online for about $17.00 each.

If you we're at DigitalLife 06 then you could have
a chance to play it too as well as the Nintendo Wii. ;)
Plus they had the preview of Final Fanstay XII

I just wonder...

Did the PS3 teach early man how to use tools?

lol. and if you don't get it don't hate.

No power brick! Yeah.

It comes with an HDMI cable and composite cables, but it's compatible with your component cables from your PS2. I'll just swap those out (the PS2 is going in my sons room on the old TV anyway) with the component cables already on my PS2, which only cost $15 anyway.

The only real problem is my wife scheduled us to leave for vacation on the 18th, so it'll have to sit in its box at home until after Thanksgiving.
