Blu-ray Disc Player BDP-S1

Sony remains determined in PlayStation 3 product; puts movie players on hold

It was discovered by an AVS Forum poster that Sony's Blu-ray Disc Player BDP-S1 has been pushed back to a target availability of "On or about December 4, 2006," marking the third delay for the product. This is small proof that Sony is indeed suspending shipments of blue diode lasers for Blu-ray movie players in favor of PlayStation 3 manufacturing (story), despite the fact that BDP-S1 will retail for a more profitable $999.95.

In another Sony delay, the company has postponed the release of its LocationFree TV Box LF-Box1, a device that will let you watch content on displays such as your TV, laptop and PSP. According a statement received by AP, the reason for delay is not due to manufacturing, but rather the need for more time to better adapt its remote controller to more models of DVD recorders and other machines the product will connect with. The delay applies to the Japanese release date, which has been pushed from October 27 to November 17. Sony still lists an October North American release for its LF-B20.

Industry onlookers are beginning to express concern over Sony's technical capabilities, especially after Ken Kutaragi's much publicized statement.

"What has become of the Sony known for its technology?" asked Akira Amari, Japan's trade minister and former Sony employee. "I hope it will solve its problems soon to quickly recover its brand image reputed for technological prowess."

When asked if Sony's reputation is suffering due to its numerous recent product delays, Sony spokeswoman Natsuki Eto said that the company decided a delay was better if the product will be compatible with more of the latest models.

More delays from Sony

Sony just can't deliver quality products like they used to. Only their TVs seem to be good. Everything else ends up being broken. The LocationFree TV Box looks like a slim and sleek PS2. Why can't the PS3 look like that instead of the George Foreman grill? Japan shouldn't complain about the original Xbox being huge and the PS3 is much bigger than that. Nationalistic pride my behind. As for Blu-ray, it seems to have problems anyway because when you burn a Blu-ray disc and try to play it on a Blu-ray player it doesn't work at all. Sony really needs to get their act together or else sell some of their divisions to their rivals.

Even their TVs aren't that great when you consider the price difference. Their cheaper models really don't have anything on a similarly priced Samsung or other quality brands. Only their more expensive models are better but then theres better sets from the same other quality brands that match them. It's been a long time since a Sony product really was any better than the competition.

I remember back when LCDs weren't around and there would be a Sony Trinitron flat screen CRT monitor sitting on the shelf next to a Viewsonic one of the same size and specs. They used the exact same tube and grills behind the screen but the Sony was $50-100 more because it might have looked a little cooler and it had the Sony brand name on it.

Though I agree with the whole blu-ray burner issue, that has been solved with a firmware update. And everything else ends up to be broken? Whaa? Every company has a couple products that are faulty, but come on. Playstation? Playstation 2? And the LocationFree TV does NOT look like a slim PS2, it looks like three slim PS2's mashed together. And the reason behind why the PS3 looks like a George Foreman grill (spot on, spot on) is the same reason why the original PS2 looked like a brick: lack of current nano-technology. You'll see in three years a super slim PS3 just like the slim PS2 and slim PSOne. And though you kinda veered away from the topic, I agree. Japan does have too much nationalistic pride: its just a console. Get over yourselves.

Sony is having trouble this year, a lot of delays, a lot of bad press, and a lot of battery recalls. But their products are still great. And I don't care what people say, Sony's Studio Monitor Series Headphones MDR-V150 are the best headphones in that price range. I've had them for six years and they still sound amazing. Their cameras (for the most part) are quite amazing (I personally have the DS-S40 4MP camera and got it for $170 a year ago, still is great). I got me a slim PS2 and its kickass.

Now you say that current products are slipping? Take a look at their notebooks, particularly the SZ series. And take even a closer look at their home entertainment section. The fact that you can get an A/V receiver with HDMI and 900W 5.1 speakers for a mear 300 dollars (or for 100 bucks more, bump up to 1000 watts ands get a 720p/1080i upscaled DVD player) is amazing. Or the fact that of all the 1080p projectors out in the market, Sony (thats right, Sony) has the cheapest one for 5000 dollars. And Sony will ALWAYS have the coolest Boomboxes and Bookshelf systems (seriously they stabbed their flag in that department years ago, and they still got it today) AND their phones (though a bit too pricy for my taste) are quite reliable and very stylish.

So just because the PS3 may be a bit bulky (really, do you want it to be that portable? how often do you LAN?) or that there are a few delays in their products doesn't mean they're slipping. Its just pre-console sickness (along with explosive battery diarrhea and blue laser diode balls). They'll be fine, and a lot of their products will still pull through (especially their PS3s).

Yeah but they're crap. Sony's amps, THD (Total harmonic distortion) is always way to high for anyone who is into sound. Japanese speakers also don't rate.

They've always had a ton of national pride. Who gave them the technology for all of the cool stuff that comes out of Japan?

Did it feel good to get all that BS of your chest?

Back when there was complaints about the XBOX both SONY and Nintendo offered similar tech in much smaller packages so the complaint was valid. Plus it was not just in Japan people complained - heck even my girlfriend complained ;-)

Also compare the PS3 with the 360 and you'll see which is more elegant - and even more so when you remember the PSU box for the 360 and the coming HD DVD upgrade.

Oh and the blue-ray issue you speak about - so what. Remember how long it took for burned DVD's to play fine back in the day. Even today there are issues with DVD media and played/burner combinations.

I really do think it's about time Microsoft stops paying looser to do anti SONY posts because there are doing a crappy job with their lies.

Why can't people just embrace that it's a wonderfull time for consoles and movie buffs. Lots of choice, competetion and no one is forcing anyone to buy what they don't want.
