HP edges past Dell in global PC shipments for the third quarter

Dell has been sitting in the driver's seat for PC shipments ever since the fourth quarter of 2003. That all changed during the third quarter of this year as Hewlett-Packard eased into the first place position. According to the latest figures from Gartner Dataquest, HP saw its worldwide shipments climb by 15% to 9.65 million units. Dell, on the other hand, saw its shipments rise by just under 4% to 9.54 million units.

"We are delighted to have reclaimed the number-one share position in a period where we also achieved profitability and revenue milestones," said HP executive CP Todd Bradley.

Analysts point to HP CEO Mark Hurd as the reason behind the company’s change of fortune. Hurd took over for Carly Fiorina in 2005 and has made great strides in trimming HP’s workforce, cuttings costs and boosting revenue.

Dell shares dropped by 6.19% to $23.17 today upon the announcement of the news. Dell depends heavily on its US operations for PC sales and a 7.1% slide in US shipments gave HP an opening. "The rate of growth reflects our efforts to rebalance our execution in areas such as pricing, growth outside the U.S. and improved customer experience," said a spokeswoman for Dell.

An analyst for Banc of America Securities wasn’t so optimistic. "If the company is unable to meet revenue estimates during a robust PC demand environment, how will the company be able to meet expectations during a weaker, slowing growth environment,” wrote Keith Bachman.

Well, it is no secret. Compairing a HP to a DELL, is like compairing a california apple to a washington apple. They are the same. What is different is the fact that Dell, does sell very cheap machines, BUT they do work. Hp sells Cheap machiens and they work. As of today, going dell or hp, is just a matter of choice. BUT for support, well i can honestly say, dell Lacks it. IN the corportate world, that will loose your contract quicker than spit. Who cares if i pay $100 more for a hp versus a Dell. If you argue the fact of buying 1000 computers, = 100,000 savings. you are not thinking like a business. ALL business's wether small or large, look into the fact that this is a 3-4 year investment. IE $3 a month, to go to HP, which is a support GIANT compared to dell, also the fact that HP's Support infrastructure are 2-4 years ahead of dell.

Server arena, it gets even worse. AMD / Intel.. Whatever.. IT is about, Warranty, Support, and migration's. With a dell, you are gonna have headaches, no matter what server you go with. HP, They are all lllll the same. From a proliant 370 to their ultra high end servers. Same video drivers, same raid controller's (different drivers) but they are all universal. IE much easier to support.

As far as warranty, HP's server support is second to none. no other vendor, offers PRE-fail warranty, like hp, and that is a HUGE force to be reconned with, in regards to support.

The price of a computer is $1000, YET the software installed easily >$2000 on a typical machine. We pay people $15-20 a hr, to punch in data. PERIOD. they arent game machines, they dont do 3d garbage. (95%) atleast. CIO's want machines, that if the thing breaks, can make 1 phone call, get it fixed. Not have to jack around with dell, about a part, not have to do 1-2 hrs of stupid, scripted support steps.

I have had dell support guys, ask me to pull power supplies out of other servers, just to see if this fixes the issue on the server at hand. DUH hello, how about fixing the issue at hand, versus, risking a huge problem, because, they lack the infrastructure to assist.
