2 million PlayStation 3 units could be elusive target

It's well known that PlayStation 3 consoles will be in short supply this holiday season, and potentially beyond. Sony still stands firm behind its promise of delivering 500,000 units at launch, with 400,000 reserved for North American and the rest for Japan. Sony, however, is now softening on its projection of being able to provide an additional 1.5 million PS3s before year's end and a total of 6 million by March 2007, Bloomberg reports.

When the topic of such numbers came up in an interview with Jack Tretton, co-chairman of SCEA, he confessed that "the honest answer is [that the shipment numbers are] more of a target" rather than a confirmed count. Tretton also reiterated that production issues were the root of the problem.

Shortage of blue diode lasers required to manufacture Blu-ray drives continue to be the Achilles' heel in PlayStation 3 production. The shortage of components not only affect production of Sony's new console, but all Blu-ray machines. Even after suspending shipments of blue diode lasers for Blu-ray movie players, Sony still faces problems in meeting consumer demand.

With the expected shortage this holiday season, gamers have been at a frenzy in attempts to pre-order PlayStation 3. Some who managed to score a pre-order are not even planning to opening the box, but instead would rather take advantage of the rules of supply and demand by listing them on eBay at a large premium. In attempts to curb user dissatisfaction, eBay is canceling auctions of pre-orders until the product hits the market.

...so the damn things are finally released and people will stop talking about it already.

;)

Its almost like near a presidential election....you just want the election to happen already because you are sick of hearing about it.

Understandable, my friend, but trust me... elections are so much worse, because unlike the debate between consoles, people actually want at least one of the consoles. Who actually likes any of the current political crap that we get in the US?

*Dead silence*

That's what I thought ;).

LOL, agreed.

The PS3 is an amazing machine but out of my "entertainment-worth" ratio. Sure, I can afford it, but it's currently not worth $600 bucks to ME.

I can tell you exactly what will happen:
1. some not all of promised # of systems will be released
2. They will sell out as fast as they can make them even if they costed $700.
3. In 6 months you will be able to walk in and buy them.

I do no plan on buying a PS3 for a while since I am very happy with my 360. But not because I think it will suck. In fact I strongly believe the PS3 will be an awesome system dispite what people are saying. there will be a few blown out of porportion problems, like the heat issue or CD scracthing issue with the 360. Blu-Ray will be awesome, although it may not win the format war and all will be happy.

Your point #3 is my biggest thing...I honestly do think the console will likely sport some incredible visuals at the very least. If the titles that come out get rave reviews over the course of many months (and btw..I don't put my stock in magazines for reviews or "professional" review websites -- I put more stock in the average joe fan who plays the games..they are much more likely to plainly say "yeah that game really sucks" or "definitely worth a buy") then I may consider it. But it would also have to feature titles that I can't get on a PC - because that's the only way I'd see value.

But either way you won't hear about me having one for a looong time. I'll wait until the craze is over to when on any given day in nearly any given EBgames store you can just walk in, pick one up and be done with it.

But I'm also never paying *more* than $450 for one either...so that'll probably mean waiting at least a year for those kinds of price drops.
