Just a random picture of queuing gamers from
We chronicle our own experience of lining up in hopes to snag the PS3 and Wii

Yesterday came and went, and with it were the last (of the first) round of EB Games/GameStop PlayStation 3 and Wii pre-orders for USA and Canada. With all the news of the PS3 pre-order fallout, we decided to check things out first-hand.

Nearly everyone who tried to get a pre-order has a story to tell, DailyTech staff included. Editor-in-Chief Kristopher Kubicki somehow found himself in line at a local GameStop an hour before opening Friday morning to snag a Wii pre-order. Even with the widespread news from Nintendo that Wii should be in plenty supply, gamers still waited at stores before opening time and snatched up all pre-orders within minutes.

DailyTech's Canadian editor shared a similar experience, except EB Games Canada lumped together the pre-orders for both new consoles on the same day. EB Games stores that were not situated in malls opened early at 8:30AM specifically for pre-ordering. We arrived on the scene at 7:00AM (we would have been there earlier, but there was news to be done) to find about a dozen gamers standing outside in the cold. Some had brought their own foldable chairs along with blankets for warmth. Nine people were there waiting for PS3 with the rest for Wii. The first person for PS3 was there just before midnight, with the 8th hitting the line by 3:00AM. We knew ahead of time that most EB Games stores would only be doing 8 pre-orders for PS3, so we left for another location -- one in a mall that opened at 10:00AM.

We were half expecting an even larger group inside the mall, mainly because it was in a more popular location and gamers didn't have to wait out in the cold, but we still took our chances. It turned out to be a wasted effort (except for the comedic value) as we saw well over 50 people by the store doors.

With nothing else better to do, we returned to the original 'outdoor' location to see what kind of pandemonium there would be at the 8:30AM opening. The crowd had split into two: a line of 8 for PS3 and a line of 15 for Wii, which yours truly managed to be the last one for the latter. While the PS3 line were all composed of young adult males, the Wii line was a bit more diverse with the addition of females, some of which were buying it for themselves and others for their children who were in school.

Our experiences were largely uneventful, but we've heard reports of mall security guards abusing their mall-cop powers by letting select individuals of their choice into the malls before the doors opened to the public. Others report extremely positive line-mates stories of sharing pizza, coffee, McDonald's breakfasts, and basically everything short of campfire singalongs of Goombaya.

We're sure that some of you have your own stories to tell, so please share them with us all in the comments section below.

1) The Wii will outsell the PS3 at least 2:1.
2) If you want to pick up the hotties, best to use your Wii!

I'm thinking about getting a Wii because I wanna play Super Smash Brothers as Snake. All hail the cardboard box of doom.

But then I might decide to just sell it on Ebay to some moron who'll actually pay $600 (or more) for it. Then I'll be closer to affording that $3500 engagement ring for my girlfriend. Gonna be crying when I buy that thing as I think about the TV and surround sound system I could get instead. :(

I hope that your priorities aren't that messed up... you might wanna reconsider the engagement ring at all. :)

If you aren't happy spending $3500 on an engagement ring ... you shouldn't be doing it. It should be something you want to spend the $$ on.

That was a joking comment. I wouldn't spend that kind of money on something unless I wanted to. Sure I would prefer to spend less, but I want her to be happy and figure if I'm buying an engagement ring it might as well be something good and what she wants. The only good thing is at least diamonds hold their value.

Pretty much. I don't think of it as signifying love though. It's more of a promise than anything. But I guess when you love someone, spending what seems like a ridiculous amount of money on so trivial a thing gets 1% easier.

Of course drinking heavily before the purchase also helps. ;) (again, being sarcastic here people)

I'd rather spend the money on a down payment on another house or other investments which will benefit our life together in the future rather than a stupid diamond. My GF agrees, or at least so she claims :). Maybe $2k or something small. Any girl who wants her fiance to spend a significant amount (e.g. 15% of annual salary) on a ring is a moron who will probably be broke when they retire.

Well if you can only get 8 PS3s and 15Wiis - yes the Wii is going to sell double because there are twice as many. (well close to double).

But like someone else said in the long run it won't matter PS3 will sell more until in 2 years.

Despite how much people are bitching now in a year or two when supply problems are over, prices drop and everything is smoothed over people will forget all about how messy the PS3 launch was while they are playing their brandy new PS3 in their living rooms.

Actually its more then double the production of Wiis than PS3s.

Yeah thats over 12 times as many, not twice as many. and i dont think the PS3 is going to last as long as everyone thinks. the System is almost already out of date with DX10 coming out next spring and the PS3 not being able to use it. neither is the Wii however, do you want to pay ~$300 for something that is fun and out of date or ~$787 for something thats fun and out of date (599system + $99HDcable + ~$89game = $787 for an HD PS3)

...the ps2 was out of date almost instantly too yet that seems to be doing just fine ;)

and dx10 isn't that big of a deal, most of the stuff it offers good developers will be able emulate anyway.

Negative, Bernd Diemer, the senior game designer for Crytek said that Next gen consoles do not have the power for Crysis because of the DX10 issue. There are talks about making a DX9 version of Crysis which would just be an uglier version of the PC/vista Version.

its not a software issue its a hardware issue. the GPUs in both the x360 and ps3 Cannot support the DX10 API, so an emulator would not fix this issue. sure the PS2 was out of date but now developers are faced with making a game that has both DX10 and 9 support which would take alot more time and money to do, or making better looking games for the PC using DX10, or making games that wont look as good for these consoles...
