100 bucks for your PS3 raffle ticket

Those who want to slightly increase their chances of procuring a PlayStation 3 would be wise to know that GameStop and EB Games are today taking pre-orders for the new console.

The following statement comes straight from the retailer:

GameStop and EB Games will begin accepting limited pre-orders for the PlayStation 3 console on Tuesday, October 10, on a first come, first served basis. Due to extremely limited supply, we expect to deplete this allocation very quickly, most likely in minutes. We will not accept additional pre-orders at this time. To avoid an unnecessary trip we strongly recommend you call your local store to determine availability. A $100 reservation deposit is required, which can be funded with cash, credit or trade. As we cannot control production and shipping issues by the manufacturer, a reservation deposit does not guarantee receipt of a system available to purchase at launch. Reservations/Purchases are limited to 1 per household.

Canadian gamers will have to sit out during this pre-order round, as the above information applies only to US stores. EB Games, however, has made indication that Canadian pre-orders will soon follow.

Currently the pre-order is in-store only. According to GameStop, online pre-orders will be announced after software and accessory availability dates are confirmed -- which likely means that all PlayStation 3 consoles will be part of a forced-bundle.

MS told Gamestop they'd have a certain number of systems and then Walmart complained and got more systems than were originally allocated to them. Where do you think these extra systems came from? MS took them away from every other retailer to satisfy Walmart's needs. Do not blame Gamestop/EB for the 360 shortage.

Yup my local Gamestop was out of preorder spots when they opened at 10am today. Now I doubt people were hanging outside of the store at that time. I have a feeling the people who worked there told their friends about it so they would sign up and then resell them on eBay. I just can't see a lot of people spending much more then the asking price to begin with for one.

My local Gamestop/EB district (that's about 5 stores total) will receive 20 PS3s. 4 systems per store until 2007. Sony is shooting themselves in the head with this one.

i got notified last night about the pre-ordered situation today, everybody who signed up for the ps3 newsletter on the gamestop/ebgames website got the email, i went in around 7am today, nobody in line, me and my friend were the first two to get ps3's, the guy at the store said that they were taking 16 pre-orders, $100 downpayment, but that it doesnt mean that they will get 16 in on launch day, i figure max 6 per store, and 16 pre-orders filled by x-mas, and yes, i plan on selling mine on ebay, im going to go wait in line at best buy and get another one, then sell one of those on ebay, i love capitalism!!!, and yes the $100 deposit is refundable

I just hope eBay follow through on their promise to remove all PS3's from their listings for the 30 days, and then these people who ruin it for those who really want a consolde get "lumbered" with something they don't want

its ebay, ebay is going to do whats good for ebay, and thats money, i wanted a ps3, and if the market on ebay is less than i thought, then i will sell it a little over retail or to a friend

When did eBay announce this? I hadn't heard anything...and wouldn't this be detrimental to eBay considering that they make money off of every listing?

Just think about how much money Ebay will make from all these PS3 sales. There's no way they will remove PS3 from listings.

I was lucky enough to preorder one after checking with 3 other local GS/EB. The store only gets 16 pre-orders and i picked up one of the last three shortly after noon.

...and wait in line on launch morning at stores that don't take preorders for PS3/Wii. That's what I'm doing for Wii, especially since Wii is launching on a Sunday. Now, I just have to figure out which stores don't take preorders...Pretty much any mass market retail-type store, right? (Circuit City, Best Buy, Target, Wal-Mart, etc.?)

and my reasoning for doing the pre-order was to avoid the colder weather and the rain that could possibly hit the area during the 17th of November.

Look at a Sony's spokesperson latest interview courtesy firingsquad.com:

Then a few sentences down he says the following:

Hoping to get on a pre-order list in Canada and then eBay the thing for over $1,000.

Is the $100 deposit refundable? Either way, I figure worst case scenario I can get what I paid for it.

This news is too late. I'd be shocked if anyone could find a place that still had any preorders left. Every game store around here (and many others according to other gamers on forums) had people lined up waiting for EB/GameStop to open. My brother was in line 30 minutes before eb opened and was #5 and they told everyone they only had 4... ridiculous.

I'm so glad I'm not a huge console fan. Its a shame for the true diehard console fans out there though....Sony is really being a jackhole on this one with such short supply.

However for me...its about as worrisome as a rainy day in May...actually not even that worrisome. ;)
