Several movie studios have announced plans of releasing movies on 50GB dual-layer Blu-ray disc technology

Sony has announced that  Click, Talladega Nights:  The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, and Black Hawk Down will be the first Sony films released on 50GB dual-layer Blu-ray disc. Although Blu-ray discs have been available on the market for several months now, these are 50GB dual-layer discs as opposed to the current discs being only 25GB. Pricing for the Sony films has not been publicly released.

Click will feature all bonus features in high-definition, along with four deleted scenes and a documentary on the special effects used in the film.

The Adam Sandler film Click will be the first movie available, with its release scheduled for Tuesday. Black Hawk Down will be released on November 14 -- Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Rocky Bobby will be released on December 12. Sony is not the only company that is releasing movies on Blu-ray before the holiday season – both 20th Century Fox, Lionsgate, and Warner Bros are planning on releasing films on dual-layer Blu-ray discs before the holiday season.

Warner has also lowered its expected sales projections for HD DVD and Blu-ray disc sales because of continued delays in hardware and software releases.

Yeah , Now we can see the real Power of Blu-ray and compare it with HD-DVD ... but all this can be avoided if Sony just used VLC :(

Sure if you wanna fork over $1000 for a BLue ray player and $500 for HDDVD... Ouch. If it wasnt for Sony, we would have had HDDVD 2 years ago and it would be cheap as hell right now. Grrrr.

In my thought, all 1st generation HD-DVD and BD players are not mature enough to unlock the even 60% of the quality potential in both formats.

Many AV analyst points out that both HD-DVD and BD is not "too impressive" compare to current top quality DVD player with powerful upscaler.

We still need to wait 1 or 2 generation's hardware b4 we can see the actual quality and difference between both format.

However, what they usually leave out is that "top quality DVD players" and "powerful upscalers" are outside the reach of the majority of consumers. An excellently transfered DVD played on a $3,000 HQV Realta-equipped DVD player does look fantastic... What I do know is that my HD-DVD add-on for my Xbox360 cost me $199.99 (prepay) and HD-DVD movies are available for ~$20 on Amazon.com.

So, naturally, does this mean HD-DVDs will start to ship in their 45GB triple-layer format to compete?

Why...?

Why would they release Click as one of the first titles? It was a boxoffice flop and I don't think the bluray first adopter demographic really is into "Click"

I agree, it may be new but I'd still rather have something like the Matrix as a bluray first buy/showcase

Blu-Ray and HD-DVD drives?

Are there any "readily-available" Blu-Ray or HD-DVD drives (no burning necessary) for the PC?

There is practically not mention about them at any local hardware stores or online stores (in Canada).

Ricky Bobby, not Rocky Bobby.

I think Rocky is Ricky's transvestite vampire brother from the planet Transexual.

We may never see a winner in the HD vs BR war. Studios aren't hot to jump on one format since they don't know which format is going to stick around longer than the other. There isn't a clear advantage of which one is better than the other, when you consider both strengths and weaknesses. Both formats will probably stick around, not for movies but for PC storage mediums. For one medium to be successful in the movie market, they would have to price the movies around the same price as standard DVDs, which is why DVDs were able to move in on tapes. But at 30 or 40 bucks for a movie that costs 9 dollars on standard DVD, people are probably happy with the movies they have now.

Why not
