Hitachi is the latest to recall Sony batteries

Hitachi has decided to join Sony's Global Replacement Program despite the fact that there have been no reports of battery fires with its notebooks. The company announced today that it plans to recall 16,000 batteries used in Japanese market Flora 210W and Flora SE210 notebooks.

Hitachi recalled the batteries as a precaution so that its customers could have the peace of mind that its laptops weren't in any risk of danger. By recalling the batteries early, Hitachi can get financial and logistical help from Sony on replacing the batteries and the company can hopefully stave off any potential fires by getting replacements in a timely fashion.

So far we've seen a total of over 7.5 million Sony batteries recalled with Dell leading the pack at 4.2 million units. That being said, we can't help but wonder if Hewlett Packard will eventually cave in and place its batteries on the recall list. A recall from HP could easily push the total to over 10 million units.

Judges from the press and industry analysts select the winners.

Zinc Matrix Power’s technology contains no lithium or flammable liquids and is free from the problems of thermal runaway, fire and danger of explosion. The batteries are also free from the regulations that limit the size of lithium-containing batteries on airplanes. In addition to the intrinsic safety offered by the ZMP cells, a notebook PC battery pack using ZMP cells can be expected to provide longer run-time than equivalent Li-ion based battery packs. The combination of longer run-time, safety, and an unrestricted pack capacity (not restricted by Li-ion battery regulations for in-flight use) make Zinc Matrix Power battery cells an attractive proposition for notebook PC OEMs.

The situation now is FUD-Fear,Uncertainity,Doubts.

Those Zinc, Silver and water batteries, how much are they supposed to cost when mass produced? I dont think that has been mentioned anywhere. So while it may seem to be a viable solution it may cost 3x the price or more of an equivilent Li-Ion battery.

Having raised more than $35 million in funding, Zinc Matrix Power's investors include Power Ventures, a large private equity group, IntelTM Capital and OnPointTM Technologies, a strategic private equity firm funded by the United States Army. Tyco Electronics, part of Tyco International, is the company's global manufacturing partner. Zinc Matrix Power batteries will be available to device manufacturers for evaluation and testing in early 2007.

the quantities manufactured will be in the millions-so the prices shoot downwards.

why was EVERYONE buying from sony? no1 else makes batteries for notebooks?

When you consider the number of notebooks sold every year the recall actually only effects a fraction of those sold in the recall period. Sure other people make other batteries, and manufacturers buy those batteries as well. You notice that only certain models and dates are covered by these recalls, meaning other batteries probably came from different sources. The problem is that everyone uses the same suppliers for all of their parts, if a supplier has a problem in the PC industry odds are every vendor will have the same problem even though they use several different suppliers for each item. This is no indicator that sony is the only battery company, that would be analagous to saying Firestone was the only tire vendor simply because of the scale of their recall.
