Sharp moves from dual-view to triple-view

We've seen dual-view LCD screens from Sharp in the past that are able to display two different images from a single screen depending on the viewing angle. Sharp is now kicking it up a notch by unveiling a new triple-view LCD that can display three distinct images.

Using the parallax barrier, light is separated to the left, central and right directions. The possibilities are endless for such a technology. A single display could be used to display three completely different images in an airport, train station or even shopping centers. Or maybe in the future, you could be sitting on the couch watching a TiVo'd episode of “The Office”, while your wife watches “Desperate Housewives” and your kid watches SpongeBob from a single LCD television display (provided you have three sets of headphones to immerse yourself).

Sharp made no mention of when they plan to put this technology into play, but for now it just looks to be a technology demonstrator.

This is sad...

The husband's watching 'The Office' while the wife watches "Desperate Housewives' and the kid watches 'SpongeBob'. They decide to have dinner. The husband gets chicken wings from KFC, the wife gets a sub from Subway and the kid gets a mini pizza from PizzaHut. It's time to sleep. The kid goes to a friend's place for a sleepover, the husband....
Fast forward 10 years. The couple is divorced, they have nothing in common.
I dunno why I'm posting this, something about the idea of a family sitting in the same room with headphones on and watching different shows sounds very very disturbing. But I can bet you, the big companies would like us to think it's a good idea. I bet you'll see ads on television showing just this, with all three family members smiling at the end, showing just how happy they are that they can watch thier own favorite shows. We already have fast food companies having us believe it's a great idea for every member to get thier own favorite food. Doesn't anyone else see anything wrong with this??

Funny AND true... while simultaneously sad.

For the record, my kids will eat what I eat, and TV will be limited.

Hey, I was just trying to think of an example and that was the first thing to come to mind :-)

But I can see how the marketers would LOVE to take advantage of this.

it's kinda like having another form of that privacy filter.
ppl sitting next to you can't see what you're seeing.

I was thinking the same, especially on business airplane flights.

I'll watch a movie, email, programming etc.... but meanwhile on the two side viewing screens will be "Care Bears adventures part# 2" and "Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Video 2006"

:)

Since TV became affortable, everyone has a TV in his/her own bedroom. So people will lock themselves in their bedroom and watch their favorite TV shows. That is even worse than tripple-view TV because with tripple-view TV, family members can at least see each other and talk about the shows they watching.

If the cost is low enough, this could be pretty hot!

ROFL

seems like it went over your head... the mirrors are there to show it works since it's just a 2d picture and we're not actually looking at the display... in reality all you'll have to do is have a couch and the 3 players sit at the different positions [viewing angles]

no mirrors required ;-)

Aye, it went over someone's head. But I dunnah think it was Mr. Danger's. See, he was taking the display off of the TV stand and putting it on his computer desk instead.

His point was that rather than having three monitors to provide you with expanded field of view in games (such as flight simulators, et al) you could just buy one monitor and two mirrors to get the same effect.

You know... I agree with some that this technology is a little disturbing, BUT it would have some useful applications, some of which have already been mentioned.

One really cool use for this would be the ability to play multiplayer console games without split-screen potentially. That's one thing that just completely kills multiplayer on consoles (except for internet-based MP of course), and I think that would be a pretty sweet use for that.

This is fantastic for multiplayer gaming. No longer will that little 60" TV be split into several tiny squares to to let your buddies play with you in your living room. Everybody gets their own little 60" image. Life is gud.

OMG THANK YOU! I was thinking that too! No more playing halo on a tiny little screen! You can play Super Smash in third person camera just abover your head. You can play MMORPGs with each other all at once! Amazing technology!

Hey those arent mirrors!

None of the potential uses for this technology outlined in the article make sense. How annoying would it be to walk past an airport screen and have arrivals and departure info vary depending on which side of the screen you're on?
And in order for one user to get the most out of this, they'll need mirrors set up just like in the photo - but then it's a reversed image, so the software will have to display a reversed image to compensate.... agghhh! This is a usability nightmare waiting to happen!

how about an example like this:
there is a screen facing the the food court at an airport.
people sitting in front of the screen eating can be watching CNN. passers by on the left can be flight info and passers by on the right can be a 24hour advertisment screen.

pays for itself ;)
the attraction is that people always like to watch when others are watching, so the advertising channel can command higher rates.

Yeah but...

Don't get me wrong, the technology is great, but the thought of a family all sitting in the same room watching three separate programs with headphones sounds incredibly scary/dysfunctional. Perhaps they could text message each-other when it’s time for dinner?

This would be useful if...

If there was some way to switch between "triple" mode and "single" mode, or even "double" mode, then this would be awesome. Sometimes you'd want other people to see what you're seeing so you can show them.

Good for work

...or good if you don't like to work. With that monitor I could play Freecell all day as long as I angle the monitor properly with reference to the boss' desk.

Booyaa!

I have a friend who always leans his head forward, as if he could somehow look around a corner while we are playing BF2. Now wouldn't it be cool if you could!! Although this would be sure to put some pressure on the poor graphics card!

lots of mod points to the first one who figures out how to use this thing for improved pr0n!

Hmmm... mirrors plus three simultaneous images... *grin*
