Last minute changes to Intel's roadmap
Contrary to what
Intel roadmaps had previously indicated
, Intel today officially announced the Intel Core 2 Quad processor. The Core 2 Quadro moniker that was designated earlier appears to have been changed at the last minute, as launch material from late September 2006 claimed the official product name would be Core 2 Quadro.
Intel's Core 2 Quad processor will officially launch in Q1'07, dubbed the Q6600 processor. The
Xeon X3210 and X3220
are expected to launch in Q1’07 as well.

In mid-November of this year, the company will announce its first quad-core desktop CPU—the
Core 2 Extreme QX6700 clocked at 2.66 GHz
. Intel is also expected to launch its
around the same time frame. All of Intel’s quad-core
will be equipped with 2x4MB of L2 cache.

I am just looking to buy a Core 2 duo system within a month and was wondering if most i965 chipset motherboards (i.e. Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3) will support quad core cpus with a BIOS update? If not, will 975 provide support?

Well, Intel is still claiming that "Kentsfield" will be drop-in compatible with any motherboard that has Core 2 Duo support. So yes.
But then again, Intel says many things that turn out not be so true...

If you have interest in quad-core motherboard compatibility, hold off your motherboard purchase until you see the "whites of Intel's quad-core eyes". Intel has a significant recent history of non-forward-compatible chipsets. (All in the interest of keeping Intel's chip-production facilities fully loaded, of course) The Intel Core2 Quad is "reputedly-compatible" with the 975-equipped motherboards; no specific mention of 965. Also, since the power-demands of the quad-core is greater than the dual-core, there may be some power-regulator issues also. Remember all the existing LGA-775 motherboards that are not compatible with Core2/Conroe because of power-regulator changes?
