Non-Cingular customers will have to wait or switch
According to several reports, Apple is on the verge of introducing its first mobile phone to consumers. The news comes forward as Apple and Cingular Wireless signed an agreement to introduce Apple's iPhone. The iPhone will be released as a Cingular exclusive sometime in 2007. Those who were previously waiting for the phone to be available as an Apple standalone product will have to look at a Cingular contract to obtain the phone.
The iPhone will be equipped with a 2.5-inch 56K color LCD and have an integrated 3 megapixel iSight camera. The built in iSight will be able to take still pictures as well as motion video. Interestingly, Cingular Wireless was also the exclusive distributor for Motorola's ROKR mobile phone, which was the first phone with integrated iTunes.
DailyTech previously reported that Apple officially confirmed the iPhone. Apple's chief financial officer Peter Oppenheimer confirmed to reporters that the company would indeed introduce a mobile phone to compete with offerings from Sony, Motorola and other manufacturers. The iPhone is expected to be in a gum-stick form factor. No details on what type of storage the phone will be equipped with -- hard drive or solid state flash memory -- but analysts currently predict iPod Nano-like storage capabilities. More details as they come.
"Paying an extra $500 for a computer in this environment -- same piece of hardware -- paying $500 more to get a logo on it? I think that's a more challenging proposition for the average person than it used to be." -- Steve Ballmer
